A ten-year-old girl has raised thousands of stamps through her Bushey school for the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity.

Beth Filer, a pupil at Bushey Manor Junior, was inspired by her grandmother to collect stamps for the charity, who then sell them on to foreign collectors.

Beth’s father, Andrew, a governor at the school ran the London BUPA 10k last year to support the school and Beth’s work.

Andrew, of Wilcot Avenue, has lived in the area all his life and as his parents supported the charity before passing away, he said the support locally has been great.

He added: "There has been a real local effort and community feel about the cause."

After Beth showed her continued commitment to the charity, Andrew and his wife, Gill, a teacher at Eastbury Farm School, decided it was time to get a family dog.

Andrew added: "Beth has wanted her own dog for a long time, but we thought she wasn’t ready before.

"Beth has now proved she can do something for somebody else."

They spent 10 months looking for someone suitable and visited many rehoming centres.

Last October, Andrew, Gill, their 12-year-old son, Ross, and Beth brought home Oscar, a Working Cocker Spaniel.

Andrew added: "We all love him to bits. He has become very popular on the school run."

The family are still urging people to donate their unwanted stamps, which can be dropped off at Bushey Manor Junior or Eastbury Farm School.
