Gipsy family feels 'racially attacked' after Hilton hotel, Watford, cancels funeral wake
5:30pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in News
By Rebecca Perring, Reporter
Mary Watson says she has been "racially attacked" after her husband's funeral wake was cancelled two days before it was due to take place.
A Bedmond woman will "fight for a new law for English travellers" after she claims her husband’s funeral was cancelled two days before it was due to take place, after the hotel found out they were gipsies.
Mary Watson believes she has been "racially attacked" because the Hilton hotel in Watford cancelled her husband’s funeral wake two days before it was due to take place.
Her husband Jacky Watson died on January 4 and Mrs Watson had organised the funeral wake to take place at the hotel in Elton Way on January 12.
Mrs Watson who lives on the Oaklands site, Bedmond Road, was informed the booking had been cancelled on January 10.
She said she believes it was a racist attack against English travellers and vows for a change in law.
Mrs Watson said: "As if it wasn’t a shock enough losing my husband, two days before they cancel his funeral. It was one shock after another.
"It makes me feel sick that the authorities that you look up to could do this and I would like to know why they did this."
Mr Watson died of an unexpected aneurism at the age of 68 which has left his family, friends and neighbours devastated.
Mrs Watson added: "Jacky was my hero and for him it was all about his children and eight grandchildren. He was well respected by everyone and for as long as I live I will not let them get away with it and I will fight for the English gipsies.
"This was a racist attack and they have judged us without knowing the truth. I want my voice to be heard and a law for English travellers so this cannot happen again."
On hearing the news of the cancellation, Mrs Watson said she contacted the Hilton and was informed a wedding had instead been booked in its place. She and her three children, Tammy Jane, Tom and Jacky were then forced to organise another location for the wake.
The wake took place in Sopwell House, St Albans and hundreds of mourners turned out to pay their respects to Mr Watson.
Tammy Jayne paid tribute to her father "the best dad in the world."
She said: "He was a true gentleman and as a quiet family man he earned the respect of non travellers and travellers alike.
"He is always in our hearts and always on our minds."
Huw Harrow, spokesperson from Hilton Worldwide said following advice from the police, concerns over guest numbers and hotel capacity meant that "unfortunately" they could not allow the function to go ahead.
He said: "At Hilton Watford, the safety and security of our guests is of paramount importance. As such, we have a responsibility to ensure that any functions taking place at the hotel comply with stringent health and safety measures.
"As a place of public accommodation, Hilton Watford does not discriminate against any individual or group and we are sorry for any distress this situation has caused."
Chief Inspector Dean Patient said police had made routine enquiries to ensure they were aware of the potential impact on local policing, including traffic.
He said: "When we are informed of planned events, including funerals with large attendances, it is normal for officers to make inquiries beforehand in order to ensure we understand the potential impact on local policing and the wider public in relation to matters such as traffic.
"In this case we were kindly informed by the family of Mr Watson beforehand that a large number of people were expected to attend and we therefore contacted relevant parties in order to coordinate policing and traffic management on the day, and ensure the safety of everyone concerned.
"Information about the event was passed on to the hotel and it appears that as a result of this, the hotel made a decision to cancel the booking.
"We were not party to this decision but we understand that this was in relation to concerns about the venue’s capacity.
"It was never our intention that in passing on the information the event would be disrupted."

It's a common scenario when people from the Holywell Estate organise something, it suddenly gets cancelled once they find out.

So, while i appreciate that as agroup the travellers may feel like they are treated differently, its hard to sympathise when this was the outcome literally every time.

I do hope she isn't suggesting the law she is seeking is for only English travellers (as it states clearly in the article), because that would be discrimination against all the other types.
And travellers don't like discrimination.

true Romany people and other travelling groups i have to say that anyone can become a gypsy in the dictoral sense of the word. What is being discussed here is the disgraceful behaviour shown toward a grieving family by the police and a "renowned " hotel group, both of whom seem to passing blame to each other. If the"larger attendances" were of concern to the police why then did they only have ONE community officer at the exit from the home of the family with such a procession ? Whenthe actual booking was made and paid for then a contract was constituted both ways -if more numbers attended than that which was agreed then the hotel group at THAT point may have been justified in further negotiations. It is clear that there were racial undertones and its worryingthat these were caused by the initial "concerns" or rather the excuses used by the police. The Watson family can hold their heads up high that their beloved was sent off
with the respect and dignity that a Romany Gentleman desreved.

As a few people have said, some people get tarred by the same brush, it has always happened and it always will, get used to it, it is part of life. The Travellers "event" got cancelled, then why doesnt someone of the travelling community build their own "social event" premises where they live, plenty of land, and then everyone can gather round there, all in one place and anjoy any "event" they like, they can even do their own clearing up as it will be where they live and will not have any effect on their future "events" just a thought !!

I don’t for one minute believe all travellers are trouble makers but a significant proportion do appear to be and certainly those give the whole community a very poor reputation. I would suggest if those that are law abiding upstanding citizens want this impression of their community to change then they need get those trouble makers that give them a bad name to change their ways. Until then unfortunately the whole community will continue to be tarred with the same brush.
As to the late notice, that could be because the hotel only found out late on it was going to be a traveller event.

Despite it being the van that was parked badly the mother started screaming at the driver of the car that was trying to park, hitting its bonnet and windscreen shouting abuse and so on. The other driver was obviously stunned but luckily another car left at that moment and she could park in a different spot. The mother continued to shout at the driver as they got out and walked off and again when they returned to their car a few minutes later.
To cap it all when they had finished their food, which they had brought outside to eat, despite there being a bin only a few feet away all the wrappers and left overs were chucked on the ground.
Now im not saying this kind of behaviour is limited to travellers or that all travellers are like this but it certainly doesn’t make me think that all the horror stories you hear arent true to a some extent.
RommanyChristian and Romadecor maybe as well trying to stop discrimination of your community when it happens you should sort out the trouble makers in your community who give all of you a bad name.

I'm not sure what those verses were supposed to do but you are quite right it’s the way you live not the way you talk that counts. Unfortunately too many travellers don’t live or talk in a 'wise' manner hence why the whole community has the reputation it has and hence why the upstanding citizens within your community are wrongly prejudiced against. Its no different to establishments not wanting rugby tour groups or hen and stag parties as they too have a poor reputation even though not every hen/stag do or rugby tour behaves badly.
Razor Sharp, the last minute cancellation does appear bad but the hotel may not have know until the last minute who was going to attend. I can appreciate the traveller connection wasn’t mentioned because it must be hard knowing that if it is that the booking wont be taken. But ultimately this all comes back to the travellers themselves needing to sort out their own reputation by tackling those within their own community that give it to them.

When I first learnt to drive and got my first car my insurance was quite high because law of averages showed that I was more likely to have an accident. More than one of my friends at the time bought cars that they then could not get insured on as due to being more powerful the law of averages showed that they were even more likely to have an accident. As the years passed and I didn’t have any accidents my insurance costs dropped considerably when I turned 25 as law of averages showed that at that age I was far less likely not to have an accident and I now drive a vehicle that I would not have been able to get insured on for many years after I passed my test.
Unfortunately real life experience has shown some people that law of averages suggests there is a higher than normal possibility of there being trouble at a traveller event and just like an insurance company wont insure some people on certain cars due to the greater risk of accidents some organisations don’t want to host a traveller event due to the greater risk of trouble breaking out.
Its not racism its economics and statistics
If travellers don’t want their reputation it is for them to change their behaviour

Few people or places can afford to do that on a matter of principal, so it must have been another reason, such as the event would probably cost the Hotel more in damages and lost revenue from patrons that it would gain.
Business is all about money, so this is not a choice they would have taken lightly, but they would have looked to past experience.

I have to admit that I havent had much to do with this community but the one traveller I know I count as a friend as well as someone I've hired a few times for various contracts over the years. But I did witness this last year in a McDonalds where I had stopped to get lunch. Whilst I was eating in the car a van turned up with a traveller family. Six children in the front aged from toddler to maybe eight or nine, far too many to have been sat in the cab legally and there certainly werent any car seats for any of them. The mother who was driving parked really badly and encroached on the empty space next to her. In they went to get their food and as they were coming out a car was trying to park in that empty spot next to them as it was the only one left.
Despite it being the van that was parked badly the mother started screaming at the driver of the car that was trying to park, hitting its bonnet and windscreen shouting abuse and so on. I'm afraid Dora the explora is incorrect. All businesses that provide a service to the public like pubs, restaurants, hotels etc, DO have a legal right to refuse entrance to anyone if they so wish.
The other point I would make is that so often there is confusion over the difference between genuine Romany gypsies and Travellers. Romany gypsies are an identifiable race or ethnic group but non-Romany Travellers are not (whatever the government may think). I suspect most travellers are not genuine gypsies at all but people who have made a deliberate choice to opt out of normal society. Some of them seem to be disillusioned left-over hippies.
That being the case - and given that some, though not all, do demonstrate the kind of behaviour that Garston Tony describes - it is hardly surprising that prejudice does exist.

n to name a few. Never have I had to cancel anything due to religion or culture , nor have I ever had Gypsy gentleman take weekly baths in our jacuzzi, shaving their entire body hair and refusing to stop.... as I have had with other races. Nor for that matter have I ever heard or seen on the news a Gypsy murderer, paedophile, or rapist.... It is 2013 not the dark ages, let these people do as they wish, many races or cultures, have their own ways and morals, however, few are as negatively viewed as Gypsy's. The insane ' big fat Gypsy wedding' programme is hideous and should not be aired as not all English, Irish, Romanian, Finnish and Swedish Gypsies are like this, and are hated in such an aggresive way. It's like assuming everyone in Liverpool wears a track suit and carry knives, every male in Scotland wears a kilt to the office, and anyone Muslim is a terrorist! On a lighter note, perhaps the clearly highly educated Skidder1066 should organise a gas chamber for Gypsies, or anyone black, Muslim etc! Or perhaps just stroll down to the local watering hole and tell some Englishmen, Irishmen, Scotsmen jokes whilst discussing today's Jeremy Kyle show. Pathetic spineless creature, obviously an upstanding pillar of the community and law abiding citizen (hint of sarcasm in my tone? yes ) I must also add, would the Hilton Hotel have cancelled the funeral tea, had it been booked by Rafael van der Vaart (Premiership footballer/Gypsy) Juscelino Kubitschek (Brazilain President/Gypsy) Bob Hoskins (Actor/Gypsy) or the late Charlie Chaplin, Elvis ....GYPSY'S !! I am fully aware there is a story that he was born in a gypsy caravan in the Midlands at Smethwick, near Birmingham, but no birth certificate has ever been found. The popular view is that he was born in south London. I think the answer is much more prosaic, i.e. his mother Hannah simply forgot to register him. She had other sons by different men.

This choice sometimes involves the advantages of 'no fixed abode' when it comes to taxation, criminal proceedings, truancy officers, trading standards, child maintainence, executing warrants, debt recovery and so on and on and on. But then of course there are also the permanent sites which are handy for benefits as and when required.
Anyone who does that is going to be treated with a certain level of contempt by the majority.
If people want to live an 'alternative lifestyle', fine. Peru has LOADS of open spaces where they won't bother anyone nearby, there is no taxation or bully-boy policing.
But then there aren't many Hotels to hire either; few 4x4 dealerships; no driveways to tarmac or gutters to clear for interesting prices.

I personally witnessed a group breaking into a car park opposite my work and rang the police. I was warned, by the police, that if I made a witness statement they could not gaurrantee my personal safety, or that of my business that overlooked the area. So I withdrew and said nothing. We were robbed about 5 days later, and about 5 days after that one of our buildings was set on fire. About 10 days later we were broken into again. Coincidence perhaps, but we had been there 8 years without incident. The travellers moved on after a month and we went another 3 years without incident.
What other conclusion can I draw?

I'm afraid you have yet to acknowledge the fact that your initial statement that the hotel had no right to cancel the funeral was legally incorrect. As I have pointed out, any pub, restaurant, cafe, hotel or whatever, has a legal right to refuse to admit someone if they wish to.
It's only an important issue to the travelling community, who choose to flout laws when it suits them. In any case, they got into a much better and more prestigious hotel, the Sopwell House, so what's the problem?

Everyone grieves when they lose a loved one but some of us deal with it in a somewhat different way. The British way of coping with death is to do it privately and remember the person as you wish to, not go running off to the papers to make a big fuss about it. My wife recently lost a much-loved aunt who she had known all her life but she dealt with it sensibly, as we all did, and accepted that these things happen. I understand gypsies do tend to be rather emotional people and make a bigger fuss about losing someone than some of us do.

Unfortunately, this obsession with vicarious grief over death began with Princess Diana and all that nonsense, with people chucking flowers off the M1 bridges onto her cortege.
The British way of copying with death is to do it in a dignified, quiet and unemotional manner. You bury your loved ones quietly, remember them but then get on with your life.
And actually Dora, I'm in my early 70s and have grown up in an unemotional way. I accept life as it is, I abhor lunatic political correctness and I don't go whingeing and whining to the papers complaining about perceived offence that doesn't exist. What none of you seem to understand is that none of your comments or views are of the slightest consequence to me. I have about as much interest in them as I have in 17th century Peruvian wood carvings and I imagine LSC probably feels the same. It would also help if some of you learned how to spell and had at least a passing knowledge of English grammar and punctuation. If you are typical examples of modern education, I am very glad that I'm not an employer since illiteracy seems to be the norm here.

If I were running this website I would insist that posters use their real names, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed on.
I wrote a column for the paid-for Watford Observer for 10 years and for the Free Observer before that and always published everything under my own name and photo. That's what columnists do because we have the courage of our convictions and a willingness to be unpopular. No-one wants a columnist who fits on the fence! You say what you think and if some people don't like my view, well tough! I suspect most posters here have difficulty in writing a postcard to their mother-in-law.

Funnily enough, I had a great-great-grandfat
her who married in a little village in the Yorkshire Dales in 1839 to a girl who came from Edinburgh. He was a hawker, according to the census, and later he went to Bradford and became the owner of a cab firm - horse-driven cabs, that is. Now, a hawker is very much a gypsy occupation and so is an involvement with horses. I've never worked out how he met his wife but, as she came from Scotland, I suspect they met on the road somewhere. Maybe they were gypsies, I wouldn't know, but it wouldn't bother me over much if they were. As a books commissioning editor for the Society of Genealogists I also commissioned a book called "My Ancestors Were Gypsies", so I am hardly opposed to the idea.
As a serious historical researcher, I accept whatever I find.

You probably aren't aware of this but I could quite easily discover the maiden names of the mothers of everybody born in England and Wales since July 1st 1911 because the birth indexes of the General Register Offices are on the internet at several websites and can be accessed by anybody anywhere in the world. The reason the world is in such a mess, old boy, is nothing to do with football, it's something called religion which bedevils the earth and putrefies people's minds. So many billions of unthinking, uncritical, unchallenging, ignorant and backward people are held in thrall by the two most backward and medieval movements on the planet, Roman Catholicism and Islam, because they have had it thrust down their throats from birth and know no better.

So these people might actually go to court for attempting to organise a completely LEGAL event that never even happened.
It wasn't because of their race, religion or gender; it was because of past experience of these events. Not all raves end up with trouble, but the propensity of evidence was enough to not only have the private event cancelled, but for criminal proceedings to be taken.
That is a direct comparison and 'race' or discrimination quite obviously played no part whatsoever.

The ridiculous word "racist", as Hornets number 12 fan says, is often used wildly and illogically by the less articulate and less intelligent to lash out wildly and and smear anyone who happens not to agree with them. This is a very familiar tactic of the Loony Left, the politically correct and the so-called chattering classes who cannot bear anyone opposing their views.
LSC and I both oppose ALL religions without exception, which we have a perfect democratic and constitutional right to do. We are not bound to have religion forced upon us, as so many millions of people who are less analytical and less able to think for themselves seem to accept.
Among the religions which we oppose - certainly in my case, anyway - are Roman Catholicism and Islam, which I regard as backward, feudal and medieval movements in numerous aspects and, being probably the two largest religions in the world, a positive danger to the future enhancement of mankind. However, opposing a religion and a culture is not at all the same thing as adopting supposedly racist views about individual members of that religion. It is the religion and the culture we oppose, NOT individuals.
However, I suspect that neither Phillypod nor Dora are sufficiently sophisticated to understand the distinction.

I should further point out that if anyone has hi-jacked the issue it was Mrs Watson who chose to take it to the press, no doubt hoping to expose the hotel and get some kind of revenge (and perhaps compensation, though I don't know whether that was in her mind or not). As LSC says, if she was expecting a reaction she got one. Having worked in newspapers, local and national, for well over 40 years, I know full well that if you go running to the press you must be prepared to accept the consequences of what might follow because it is the law of averages that not everyone will agree with you! There's an old saying that if you deal with the Devil (not that I believe in him any more than I believe in God, of course) you should sup with a very long spoon! Many celebrities who thought they could manipulate the press have found this out to their cost.
Personally, if I'd had a bad experience with a hotel I would write it off to just that - experience - vow never to go there again and tell all my friends not to go either. It would be the hotel's loss because they'd have lost business.

No, I will request my family or whoever survives me to arrange a humanist funeral. The most moving funeral I ever went to was of a very old friend and colleague a few years ago. It was in a crematorium chapel and there were no hymns, no vicar, no priest, not even a humanist celebrant. My friend's daughter made a beautifully written, superbly delivered speech about her father which moved some people to tears because he'd been a very popular guy. Then she paused a few seconds, then walked to the stand where the coffin was laid and just pushed the button to despatch him. Then we all went to the pub and got drunk in his memory!
I don't expect you to understand this but not everyone cares for the rigmarole and excessive paraphernalia of religious ritual.

Well, they could get a mortgage and buy a house, or apply for social housing or rent private accommodation, like the vast majority of people in society have to do. If a group of people chooses deliberately to put themselves outside of what most of us consider society's norm, then that is their lifestyle choice and they will have to live with the potential consequences.
As I said much earlier in this debate - and nobody bothered to try and understand it, they just launched scurrilous attacks - I for one do not accept that travellers are a genuine ethnic race. Born and bred Romany gypsies yes, other travellers, no. Some seem to be just itinerant, disaffected hippies who are incapable of settling down anywhere. The cost of the Dale Farm dispute was horrendous to local residents, the local authority and society. Why should the majority be held to ransom by just one minority group?

Likewise all those Muslims who believe they're going to go to Paradise and be waited upon by vestal virgins or be cast down into the fires of Hell!
Feel cost and comfy in your beliefs, I don't need them, thanks very much. The only aspect of religion that remotely interests me is that I am very grateful most of my ancestors went to church or chapel because it enables me to find them in the baptism, marriage and death registers, thus enabling me to trace my family history. That is my only interest in religious matters at all. I might also say that your constant playing of the race card is not doing you any favours in some areas. You see, yet again, you get it wrong!!! We do not hate gypsies, we simply do not accept that all travellers are gypsies. Quite simply, they are not.
I mentioned earlier in this thread, but some of you are so ignorant or short-sighted that you didn't notice it, that I am the commissioning editor, wearing one of my numerous hats, of a series of books for the Society of Genealogists in London called "My Ancestors Were....." . One of our books is called "My Ancestors Were Gypsies", a very good and comprehensive review of how to trace gypsy ancestors. Do you really imagine I would have been an editor of that work if I hated gypsies? But the book is about proper gypsies, not hanger-on travellers, but you clearly don't understand the difference.
Unfortunately, you seem to be so obsessive in your views that you don't understand what some of us are trying to say.

Utter twaddle. Romany gypsies are a genuine ethnic race, Irish and Scottish Travellers are not, whatever nonsensical European laws may say. What about Yorkshire Travellers, then? Are they a protected race or is the European government racist also?
I wonder your human rights advisers don't advise you what an absurd dog's breakfast the Human Rights Act has become.

The main argument has been completely forgotten.
A woman, a human being, lost the man she loved! An already stressful and emotional time was made even worse, by an un compassionate and openly racist hotel chain.
At times of sorrow and grief we look for kindness in others. Mrs Watson was denied this.
In 2013, we are all so politically correct, we have to use the correct terminology for everything, words such as '****' and 'Nig nog '' deemed as racist and offencive! Even carry a jail sentence.
With this in mind isn't it mind blowing to think that a group of individuals were denied access because they were deemed 'gypsies.'
The traveller community do not make any demands on society. They do not require their own place of worship, their own laws, own way of killing animals, their own clothing to coincide with their religion, own language. Nor do they plot to blow up innocent people! In the name of their own belief.
England seems to be tolerant of all of these religions and races, but the poor traveller community are treated like second class citizens, with no human rights. Why??
My best friend is is a gypsy, she is one of the most honest, decent, hardworking, compassionate people I know.
She comes from a world where men are men and woman are women. What is so wrong with this?
Leave the gypsy people in peace to live as they wish, and grant them the same rights as the rest of the United Kingdom, just like we do for Muslims, Jews and Christians alike.
Mrs Watson I hope you are given a formal and public apology for the racial hatred you have suffered. My thoughts are with you.

The fact is that the travelling community are not poor (some of them have caravans worth more than some people's houses) and they DO make demands on society. They appear to think that their rights take precedence over the rights of the rest of us, which gives them the right to invade other people's property, flout planning laws, seize control of land and ignore the local council as at Dale Farm, which cost society many hundreds of thousands of pounds to evict them. Local residents at Dale Farm reported that their lives were made a complete misery by the travellers, who even used the gardens of residents to "do their business in" because they were so unsociable and uncivilised.
And as I keep on stating, the majority of travellers are NOT genuine gypsies. They are an amalgam of real gypsies, Irish and Scottish tinkers and disaffected, leftover New Age hippies .

How would a law protect Mrs Watson? For a hotel chain, circumventing legal requirements is not difficult. There are loopholes and flexible interpretations abound in law today.
Assuming that it was made illegal to discriminate against all travellers, a hotel could still say that it could not accommodate such an event, or it was fully booked, or request written details of the event before declining the booking for various management, resourcing or other justifiable reasons.
Race / prejudice aside, no one should have their booking cancelled at such short notice. Mrs Watson and her friends and family probably made a number of arrangements and expended funds to meet at the venue. Had they not accepted her booking in the first place, she could have made alternative arrangements. It is this aspect/treatment I find unacceptable, regardless of arguments on 'race' and/or prejudice.
As for treatment of the traveller community in society and how the law could extend to protect them is a complex debate. The education system and Ofsted inspection frameworks from September 2012 already considers them as a group, together with other minority groups, so some change is on the way.

When some sensible forward thinking person allowed or encouraged private sites , as is Mrs Watsons, then many gratefully seized that opportunity. I saw a major TV documentary at the time of the Dale Farm fracas in which the programme makers tried very hard to be fair to both sides. They interviewed some traveller teenage girls who really could not understand that some people found it unacceptable that they dropped their human waste in people's gardens, in the woods and on public footpaths. They said it was dirty to use a toilet in the caravan where it might infect food! The thought that people might be upset by treading in their mess when walking in the woods did not seem to have occurred to them. Apparently, it was their "culture", so the rest of us had to put up with it.

So Roy does this mean you beat ur wife and are fond of the occasional wife swop!!?? Roy my advice is to think before speak!!

If you live in a village, are putting down roots there and living happily amoung the people. What makes you (or your partner) a traveller and not just a villager like anyone else? Travellers are not a race, DNA proves that, Is it certain traditions or rituals, a bit like a religion?

To try and get some common sense back into this debate, perhaps then I may be permitted to ask you a question? Why are Scottish and Irish travellers regarded as a separate race but English and Welsh travellers - and presumably travellers from any other nation - are not??? Is that not in itself racist? Doesn't this simply serve to illustrate what utter nonsense the whole situation is?
It was the last loony Labour government, with its politically correct obsessiveness about equality, that introduced this absurd legislation and made a dog's breakfast of the whole thing! The law should be repealed because it is responsible for creating a situation in which some groups are being given special treatment and shown favouritism over others. If I wanted (which of course I do not) to buy myself a camper van and spend the rest of my days travelling around the country I wouldn't be given legal protection because I am English, but Scottish and Irish travellers ARE given legal protection, right? So where is the justice in that and what are you doing in your presumably well-paid role to address this unfairness?
The monstrous race relations industry has got totally out of hand and created a cosy little niche for people like you to spend your life interfering in other people's lives, has it not? As I keep on pointing out, and which you seem not to understand, travellers are NOT an ethnic race!!!!! Why, oh why. can't you understand that? Only genuine Romany gypsies can be classed as a separate race; the rest are just a mixture of Irish and Scottish tinkers, tarmac layers and left-over New Age hippies, disaffected people who can't cope with normal life. In other words, they are a ragbag of individuals and not a separate race and should never have been regarded as such. Moreover, some - and I only say SOME - behave quite appallingly because they do not seem to understand how civilised, normal people behave.
If they want to become respectable and respected, then let them join the society they affect to despise. Let them buy or rent a house, get a proper job, settle down, pay their taxes like the rest of us and stop roaming around the country causing chaos by illegally invading people's land and making their lives a misery.
BTW, I will respond only to a proper response from you and I will ignore any further stupid and moronic comments from Phillypod or Dora.

As for Ofsted inspection from September 2012, the following protection is in place in the further education sector:
Groups of learners
146. Primarily, inspection evaluates how individual learners benefit from their courses and learning programmes. We must test the provider’s response to individual needs by observing how well it helps all learners to make progress and fulfil their potential, especially those whose needs, dispositions, aptitudes or circumstances require particularly perceptive and expert teaching and, in some cases, additional support. Depending on the type of provider, such learners may include:
disabled learners, as defined by the Equality Act 2010, and those who have special educational needs14
boys/men
girls/women
groups of learners whose prior attainment may be different from that of other groups
those who are academically more or less able
learners for whom English is an additional language
minority ethnic learners
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller learners
learners qualifying for a bursary scheme award
looked after children
lesbian, gay and bisexual learners
transgender learners
young carers
learners from low-income backgrounds
older learners
learners of different religions and beliefs
ex-offenders
women returners
teenage mothers
other vulnerable groups.

Existing evidence, including from the
consultation, highlights high rates of anxiety, depression and at times self-destructivebeha
viour (for example, suicide and / or substance abuse).
These are, on the face of the evidence, responses to 'cultural trauma' produced by the failings of 21st century British society and public bodies' failure to engage in an equitable manner with members of the communities. Having reviewed the strength of the evidence of the
prejudice and discrimination faced by Gypsies and Travellers, the authors of the report were surprised that more members of the Gypsy and Traveller communities
had not succumbed to negativity, and remained resilient in the face of what are often multiple and complex forms of exclusion."

I also have the feeling that just about everybody in the country is now a member of some minority or other - whether it's ethnic, sexual or whatever - that believes it is being persecuted and demanding favouritism. Are there no normal people left any more? Why can't people take responsibility for their own lives these days instead of jumping up and down, whingeing and whining about persecution (much of which is largely perceived) and expecting the state to do everything for them?
I've never claimed a benefit or anything in my life except NHS treatment and my state pension, both of which I've paid for. I've always looked after myself and my family by working hard, earning good money, buying a house, saving a few bob and generally accepting responsibility for my own life and decisions. I don't claim welfare benefits and I'm not a burden on the state, nor do I expect others to help me if I get into a few problems. Sadly, this country has become a haven for whingers and whiners and squealers who are absurdly hypersensitive and see inequality and prejudice all around them because they go seeking it out deliberately.
Our ancestors lived in far, far tougher times than we do but they survived. We now seem to live in an age where people expect the state to support them and do everything for them. They should get off their backsides and do something to help themselves!!!

We now live in an 'entitlement society', where most of the new generation believe they have a right or entitlement to something. That much I concede.
You should really read the Equality Act 2010 carefully. It does not just deal with minority groups and there are a number of limitations, especially on the characteristic of 'age'.
There is cross-party support for for the Act. There is no reversal, unless the BNP get into power, which is as likely as the economy entering a boom period tomorrow.

As an on-the-road journalist when I was younger, I probably spent more time travelling - in Britain, Europe and America - than I did at home! My wife rarely knew whether she would see me come home at night or whether I would call her from Manchester, Madrid or Miami and say I wouldn't be home for a week. What about people who are forced to travel widely in the course of their job? Are they any different to show people just because they mostly stay in hotels rather than caravans? As I said, it's a choice people make when they decide to go into the show trade. When you make a lifestyle choice, then you have to live with the consequences and drawbacks.

Well, I'm glad we agree there. Unfortunately, there are far too many young people who seem to think the world owes them a living. It DOESN'T! Nobody owes them a job, nobody owes them a house. These things have to be earned by application, hard work and sometimes taking chances. But so many people don't seem to want to get off their backsides, instead they prefer to live on benefits and state handouts.
My 102-year-old mother-in-law (yes, 102), always throughout her life has lived with the maxim "If you make your bed you've got to lie on it" and I believe there is much truth in that.
The only state benefits I've ever had are the NHS, a state pension (both of which I've paid for) and a bus pass. I'm sick of reading about people who want the council to find them a bigger house or complain they can't afford to feed the kids on benefits when the kids have probably all got DVDs and iPads, just as I am sick of reading about people who whinge and squeal about being deprived of their supposed 'yuman rights' because of racism and other excuses.
What part of the Equality Act should I be looking at, then, especially to do with age?

I served a 4-year apprenticeship, worked hard and all hours and via a series of provincial papers I eventually got to Fleet Street and the nationals, where I became a widely-travelled reporter, meeting lots of well-known people, eventually moving inside to become an executive and ended up in a fairly senior position before taking early retirement in my fifties because I'd managed to build up a reasonable pension.

Roy, you championed free speech in defence of me a few weeks back, which I found very civil of you and maybe suggested that you like to open debate up and add a little controversy to the subject? After all we hardly ever agreed on our sporting ideals yet here you was defending this thick comprehensive educated fool!

Most of my clients have English as a second language, but I don't correct their English. That would be impolite and would probably lose me business.
I have no issue with having a dig at poor English usage if the argument is completely flawed and the poster is talking nonsense. Otherwise, it just isn't worth the effort.
Roy is correct in one respect, the quality of education and correct English usage in the public sector has declined dramatically.
If traveller children feel marginalised at school and are abused or bullied, they are not likely to have a productive education, even if they have the opportunity to study at an acceptable school.
There appears to be an academic / educational deficit and disadvantage from an early stage, not to mention "cultural trauma", according to one of the reports I gave a link to earlier.

In other words, you've made the choice, now get on with it, but don't expect the rest of us to help you out if it goes wrong.

The state school system and its education have been devalued and diluted by inferior standards in a race for league table rankings and over-emphasis on inspections.
The high quality private education system is out of the reach of most and recently university funding, via student number controls, incentivises recruiting those to whom number controls do not apply - students with the equivalent of grades ABB at A level. Graduate unemployment is at its highest level, the job market is bleak and public services are being squeezed.
In this context, the trade-off that travellers have made seems less harsh. Would I swap the shackles of suburbia - no, would I consider living in other countries - yes.
If travellers are happy with their lifestyle choice, then good luck to them. After all, we do not live in a fascist state ..... at least not yet.
How do you know Roy, the travellers' circle of friends, the culture they engage in and the transitional intra-community support structures that might exist?
I don't sympathise with them, but I want to keep an open mind.

I accept your point but, as I have been at pains to point out (along with others), if people choose to be travellers, then that is a deliberate lifestyle choice and they must accept the possible consequences, one of which is that their children may be disadvantaged and not get a proper education.

Your other points are simply absurd, if not offensive, because you don't really know me at all. Why you think I am bitter towards the world I have no idea. I simply have my own views as to what is right and wrong about our society, views which are shared by many others, including some very respected media commentators.
In essence, I believe people should stand on their own two feet, apply themselves to hard work to support themselves and their family and not expect the state to bail them out. What's wrong with that? It's a view held by many people.
Your promise to pray for me is highly amusing. As I said before, I'm sure you mean well but if you really cannot see that it is very patronising I don't wish to engage in any debate with you because clearly your arguments wouldn't be based on logic.
The only thing you don't seem to get about me is that I care little for what anyone thinks of me. I just enjoy myself witnessing some of the pathetic responses!
My favourite all-time quote is one of Oscar Wilde's which runs thus: "There is only thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about". That sums up my philosophy towards my critics.
BTW, Mrs Stockdill isn't remotely religious, either, but I am sure she will be as amused as I am when I tell her you're praying for her!!!

We have become a nation of cry babies and touchy-feely, soppy fools, especially young people who seem to have no understanding of how death and grief should be dealt with. Contrast the hysterical scenes at Diana's funeral (people tossing flowers on the cortege as it went up the M1) with funerals in the past of people like King George VI and Winston Churchill - dignified and solemn occasions at which the nation stood to attention silently but didn't break out in sobs and hysterical crying! Older people know how to cope with death in the British way because they went through the war.
I fear this country could never again fight another war on our own territory because I doubt young people have the backbone for it.

It's possible to have compassion without shouting about it from the rooftops. Grieving should be done quietly and with dignity, which is why I find the whole rigmarole of setting up Facebook pages for victims and turning parks and public streets and roadsides into shrines for the dead extremely unedifying and unBritish. I couldn't grieve for Princess Diana because I never knew her other than as a public figure and her death had no personal effect on me whatsoever.
I've been to many funerals and memorial services in the last few years for old colleagues and friends. You pay your respects, you remember them as you want to remember them and then you have a wake afterwards. That is how the vast majority of journalists are - we don't make public displays of emotion bordering on the hysterical as was the case with Diana.
Now I really am thoroughly bored with this exchange, so I suggest we agree to end it.

I'd like to ask a question of the travellers posting here. I personally don’t believe that all travellers live up to the popular stereotype given of them, but would you agree that there are elements within the traveller community whose actions serve to give all of you the poor reputation you have?
Hotpoint is quite right, it must be frustrating as anything to be tarred with the same brush. Not quite the same but I know I get antsy when Roy and LSC pick on my faith is central to my life just as being a traveller is central to yours I'm sure taking fringe or extremist views and claiming all Christians are the same.
For me its still a law of average thing, maybe I'm naïve but I don’t think the police would have warned the hotel unless they believe themselves that there was potential for trouble at the funeral tea. And I don’t know any business that would go against police advise like that, especially not a business in the hospitality sector. And as others have pointed out the police do give warnings about non traveller groups, the pub being closed on Friday as was mentioned due to the football for instance. The higher than normal police presence when Luton come to town for another. The rave that was stopped the other night. Might be harsh on the individuals concerned who had no thought of trouble but all examples of things where trouble has a higher than average chance of happening.
I don’t know the statistics but assume that unfortunately there is a higher than average chance of trouble breaking out at a traveller function (based on previous incidents) and hence therefore the warning given. Does that mean trouble is limited to just that group, of course not but by the same token if statistics show this problem then its not racism or discrimination but hard facts that lead to some hotels not wanting to hold such functions.
On a wider basis I get the impression that the traveller community do like to keep themselves to themselves. Is that right? As such its going to be hard for someone outside of that community to get to know a traveller, would you agree? Therefore public perception is going to be based on what they see. Unfortunately more often than not what they see is travellers camped illegally on land, causing trouble for the owners and leaving piles of rubbish behind when they do go. What they hear is stories of intimidation and poor workmanship. What they see is things like Dale Farm and they perceive that there is a disregard for the law. What they see is that traveller (my apologies I cant recal his name) winning Big Brother and then being sent to jail (with his sons?) for assault and having half his ear ripped off in a bare knuckle fight in another incident. It may not be right but can you understand why the traveller community has a poor reputation?

When I commited to Christ i simply felt a burning desire to be as he so asks-for me its the most wonderful place ive been -i cannot descibe my change-i feel others see, others know it
Whilst i answer my feelings i am not trained nor educated theogology and rely on others and then my perception of .What i will say is i had all the schooling available to me even being a choir boy but never understood it all.My biggest regret therefore has to be not knowing where to begin -many others would have not suffered my presence.
You let Nicky Gumbel through a Alpha course try to explain as he did for me-you can debate all you like there many questions have not and may not be ever be answered -If you ask the Lord to come into your life he will He loves you and he loves me there is no question of that.I would suspect many of the thousands who know me of old will be saying ive cracked up-i am here, you can be too

@romanychristian; It is interesting to have some travellers on here and hear their views. As a christian, how do you feel about so many travellers so often occupying other people's land? Does that not breach one (at least) of the 10 commandments?

We are born as we are and into who we are. We cannot change it, so we accept it, embrace it and make the most of it. After all this is what life is about.

I'm not picking on any particular group with this statement by the way, it’s a general comment and just as easily applies to those that have what would be considered a good background who do decide to do bad things. I get fed up for instance of hearing people blame their woes in life on society when they themselves chose not to try in school and therefore couldn’t get a 'good' job and do well for themselves. That’s not being victimised that’s suffering a self inflicted wound.

I for instances disagree that Jesus dying on the cross did away with the 10 Commandments. His sacrifice was so that we could all be saved through His grace and no longer through our own works. The laws that were done away with were the ceremonial ones, paul is quite clear on that in Ephesians.
In Revelations it even talks about the beast waging war against those those that keep 'the commandments of God'. For those unsure the beast is the baddy here.
Revelations 14:12 ' here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus'
If the Commandments were done away with why are they mentioned in relation to the end time?
Mathew 5:17 ' Think not that I have come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy but to fulfill'
Romans 3:31 ' Do we then make void the law through faith? Giod forbid yea we establish the law'
Jesus came to show us the true meaning of 'the law' and summed it up in that He told us the greatest thing is to love one another.

At LSC. Your research on Nicky Gumbel is incorrect. He has been working full time as a priest at his church in London for over 20 years. In 2005 he got became vicar. It has over 11 ful time priests (with congregation of 4,000) and only the head priest is termed vicar. He did though as you say give up a potentially lucrative career as a barrister as he felt called to Full Time church leadership.

You are a christian but only actually follow the bible to the extent it suits you.
That is fairly typical, although not everyone is so honest about it.
I personally don't understand how you 'cherry pick' the bible and live your life based around things like the 10 commandments but then say we tend to gloss over number 3, 5 and 9 (randomly picked numbers) because that justifies a lifestyle choice of occupying other people's land illegally, defacating in public car parks and letting others clear up the mess, and avoiding general taxation.
If there WAS a Jesus, I somehow think that wasn't what he was about.

Nope you are not concentrating again ! For me as a Christian i will follow the Commandments and continue to read the Bible daily and try to understand its meaning and direction
But i reiterate that the Bible did not bring me to The Lord.I believe in all that happened - i see His Creation every day .
I did not suggest all Romany were Christian-i said that Race had some things that were Christian in their beliefs.
I cannot answer for all Christians or all Romany or all travellers
What people do is their business be it right or wrong BUT someone has to offer forgiveness be that their parents ,children, friends,an
d ultimately The Almighty .
You single out two things.
The occupation of others land-and defacating in public car parks
Ok i dont know wether those you refer to were Christians nor Romany nor raveller .I would suspect that whoever it was they would rather use a toilet if it was available car parks used to offer such facilities.I have seen many taking short and using laybys and all-town centre drinkers etc that deos happen uk wide-it even happened in an infamous road race .
If land is occupied illegaly it will be dealt with eventually .Why not question what all non traveller /Romany do wrong?

The New Commandment versus Old Commandment debate is interesting. Jesus taught that the key 2 commandments (Love God with all your heart, Love your Neighbour) underpin the 10 commandments and indeed the several hundred over rules and laws in the Old Testament. If you keep these 2 you will by definition keep the Ten..ie if you love your neighbours you will not steal, be envious, kill, commit adultery etc Jesus was also aiming teaching at Pharissees who would keep every speciifc rule but then walk past a man dying because to touch him on the Sabbath would be 'unholy' ie they were missing the big picture which is to love God and your fellow man, not neccesarily worry about every single ultra precise rule if this leads to 'wrong' outcomes.

Often silence can say as much as a 1,000 or more words. The lack of an answer usually means the listener has to make up their own minds, again something which in this case means that members of the traveller community have missed an opportunity to distance themselves from those in their community who are the root of all their poor reputation.

On these two commandments hang all the LAW and the Prophets

i cannot see the logic in any argument you put forward-in any society there are such problems-can anyone account for it all -simply impossible and crazy to suggest it.
Fines and law apply to both sides,we exist and we pay penalty like all else it is a nonargument
There is NO leader of Romany/traveller groups, there are Elders and Christian within those groups-who then do you propose "we sort out the troublemakers " ??!!
Do you realise the numbers ?
I did say i would give you some answers if you would refrain from postings that created the mistrust that those postings create. You still crave an answer to "the guy who won big brother" and our desire to keep private. OK lets go------
After the last few days on here and after reading other posters on the subject of The Pope resignation i fully support the privacy Traveller/Romany
reserve.No-one can blame them, they have and are right to remain suspicious and have fear outside of their own communities.
If I am prepared to engage in some diaologue then that will be on my head but i do so from a slightly different grid.
BIG BROTHER WINNER won on his own merits for who he was not pretended to be.He follows a faith and believes, for that.-he is the man .
He stands up for his beliefs and his family the way he thinks is the right way be it right or wrong.I can arrange for you to meet with him and you can ask the questions but it could be a while as he is filming with Brad Pitt in the states. Some of his breed have taken their skills into the boxing ring and are progressing through the ranks and i can guarrantee the next heavyweight champion of the world will be a Romany Christian !

However you and Phillypot on the other hand have posted a number of times since my post of Monday afternoon and have steadfastly refused to respond despite acknowledging it. I'm sure you can see the difference there.
You can give me the benefit of the doubt all you like, I didn’t at the time see the need to explain why I knew they were travellers but I wouldn’t have recounted the story if I wasn’t sure of who they were. There is no point making up tall stories as it serves no one any good.

Absolutely everyone has their right to privacy, but my question again is can you not see how if you are secretative for want of a better way of putting it then its harder for people on the outside to get to know you and they are more likely to believe the negative things that people say about you?
I'll give you an example, I know a lot of Muslim people and don’t for one second believe they are all wanting to kill westerners and enforce their religion on everyone else. However they can be a closed community and people who don’t know them will be more enclined to believe every time some terrorist act is done in the name of Islam that all Muslims are of that ilk. They are not.
Ditto the traveller community, if people in wider society don’t have an opportunity to get to know you then they will look at people like the big brother winner or at programs like my big fat gypsy wedding and think all of you are like that.
That’s one of the points I was trying to make and was trying to get you to acknowledge.

Odd in someways that it is called 'Hilton Watford'. It isn't in Watford by some margin. A bit like 'London Luton airport' is not in London!!

TONY it took many days for you to respond after someone replied to your posting regarding the behaviour of a woman and her chidren at Macdonalds (9. 03 8 feb) you identified them and tagged them as Travellers because of that behaviour and despite giving a lengthy account failed to mention you tagged them as such because you had seen them at their camp earlier.Well i will give you the benefit of the dought.
i cannot see the logic in any argument you put forward-in any society there are such problems-can anyone account for it all -simply impossible and crazy to suggest it.
Maybe you should let us stay on car parks and fields we might get too clever and become M P s !!
I have had many chat's with his trainer and uncle Peter. The most lovely and genuine man i have ever dealt with.
Both believe in the lord. I respect every gypsy/traveller because the adhere to the moral's and principal's that have been handed down through their history.
If more country folk lived their live's to these moral's the world would be a better place!

Actually I didn't come onto this site over the weekend so didn’t see the question in response to my McDonalds post until around midday Monday at which point I did respond immediately. If I had been posting in between you might have a point. I wasn’t, wasn’t online even and your point is invalid. I cant respond to something until I have seen it can I!

I can take you to McDonald's in Bracknell any night of the week and show 20, 18 year old white christian's and athiest's throwing rubbish around, racing their suped up fiesta's around and trying to intimidate people?!
I do not see why you would post what you did on a post about a human being's husband dying other than to rile people up.

Thats where you puzzle me.You cannot discriminate because of RACE"
I promise you I question a lot of people from every walk of life about a lot of things. I most certainly do not discriminate on grounds of race, but I do very much so on the grounds of 'lifestyle choice'
If somebody choses to be anti social or willingly break the law for their gain and to the detrement of others, I will discriminate against them very strongly indeed. Like people who decide to live on somebody else's land, pay no rent and when finally forced to leave after expensive court action, leave the place in a state and move on to do it to somebody else.
If you call that discrimination, then I hold my hands up to it.

Thats just what it was - a story about something that happened that you had seen and your conclusion that a hotel could have reason to cancel a funeral tea because of it.
Two issues arrise from that :and although i could point them out ,i am compelled to let the matter take its course elsewhere.

you are drifting again.
Why do you not question what all NON Romany/traveller do wrong ?
Why the challenge in favour of the hotel involved-its clear you have personal difficulties with our race -you say they robbed you and the Police warned you not to prosecute -do you expect any credibility from that ? you say Romany is not a race ,
and that God deos not exist
"you know too much "

As for your first sentence, I answered that in mine. I question all sorts of lifestyle choices and opinions. I question especially the ones who affect adversley other people's lives, like some traverllers do. I question the BNP, the Klu Klux klan, the Taliban, the IRA, the Black Panthers, The Moslem Brotherhood, the Mafia, drug takers, drug dealers, gang members, criminals in general, Fox News, people who watch Strictly Come Dancing and of course the French.
All the above and many more besides.
You are correct that I say god does not exist (I assume you mean the christian one, there are a lot ones alledgedly out there) but that is another subject.

These were not gypsy children, if tony gets his head out of his backside and looks into the real world he may see its not just gypsy or travellers who do all the things he keeps harping on about! Poor Tony would need counselling if he ever drove through moss side or Salford in Manchester, or Kirkby in Liverpool! He would witness far worse than his scary McDonald's incident haaaaaa x

Chrisbottom if you read the thread then you'd see the point I was trying to make. There is a lot to trawl through so I understand if you missed it.
RomanyChristian you're also still missing the point I was/am trying to make! I've also never claimed, in fact quite the opposite, that non travellers are perfect or better than travellers. I'd ask both of you not to put words in my mouth thank you but I'll not make my points again, its boring having to repeat over and over and not get an actual response.
