Retrial for Phil Delaney, accused of death by careless driving

A van driver is to face a retrial on a charge of causing death by careless driving after a jury failed to reach a verdict yesterday (Thursday).

Phil Delaney, 25, was accused of causing the death of teenager Thomas Wood in a crash on the A412 near Maple Cross, Rickmansworth, at around 5pm on September 8, 2011.

Thomas Wood, 17, suffered a traumatic brain injury when his Honda motorcycle was struck by the white Vauxhall Vivaro van that was turning right into Old Uxbridge Road from the A412 Denham Way.

The jury at St Albans crown court failed to reach a verdict and were discharged by Judge Stephen Gullick.

A retrial for Mr Delaney, of Jackets Lane, Harefield, has been set for July 29.
