Lib Dem backing for Police Crime Commissioner's G4S decision

Liberal Democrat councillors have backed the Police Crime Commissioner’s decision not to outsource back office police functions to G4S.

But the group has stressed the importance of preserving front line police numbers ahead of the budget discussion at next Thursday’s Police and Crime Panel meeting.

Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd unveiled plans to remove 136 police officer and staff posts this year but would freeze the police precept.

Liberal Democrat county councillor, Chris White, said: "The Liberal Democrat team are watching the police budget very closely. 

“Significant savings need to be made, even more so now that Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner has appointed himself a deputy which means Herts Police now have to find an extra twenty thousand pounds a year to pay for her two days a week.

"Front line police numbers must not be cut to balance the books, especially when the Crime Commissioner and his deputy are pocketing£95,000 a year in salaries plus expenses."

I'm waiting for when outsourcing (and zero contract hours) in hospitals, eduication, prison security,etc becomes a very bad smell as we continue to destroy any stability or goodwill in the work force who are critical in delivering quality services.

After the Olympics fiasco, G4S brings to mind a famous saying about managing and a brewery........
If the Tories had any dignity left, G4S and that other 'great' private foreign firm ATOS should be chained to a 17th century sailing vessel and sent to Oz in chains.

Actually, my understanding is that it was not solely a decision by the Herts PCC not to award a contract to G4S. It was meant to be a joint decision between the PCCs of Herts, Beds and Cambs. One of the three PCCs (not David Lloyd, as I understand it) would not agree to the back-office admin work of the three police services being given to G4S, and it was this refusal that scuppered the possibility of G4S gaining the contract. The Watford Observer might want to investigate the true and real facts behind this decision, if they are committed to real investigative journalism? I suggest the Lib Dems wait until they are in full possession of all the facts before coming to any conclusions on this or any other policing-related matters.
