Hertfordshire Deputy Police Commissioner Rachel Frosh: 'Not my intention to offend' with Hitler tweet

Hertfordshire’s deputy police and crime commissioner has said she did not intend to offend anyone by posting a quote by Adolf Hitler on microblogging site Twitter.

Dr Rachel Frosh, a Conservative town councillor, provoked upset from other Twitter users when she retweeted a post which drew a parallel between Hitler’s National Socialist Party and modern socialists.

The post said “Dear Socialists embrace your inner Nazism” and had a picture of Adolf Hilter with a quote from 1927.

In the quote Hitler describes his fledgling Nazi party as “socialists” and the “enemies of the capitalistic economic system.”

Today Dr Frosh said she did not mean to offend people who consider themselves socialist but highlighted her dislike of Hitler being associated with the right wing of the political spectrum.

Speaking to the Watford Observer she said: “It is the perils of doing a retweet. I don’t remember retweeting it. It doesn’t mean I agree with it.

“I think racist extremist parties are off on their own. They are not extreme right or extreme left, they are nowhere. They are just unacceptable.

“Basically what I am saying is that any racist party is not anything to do with any mainstream party.

“When the BBC talk about the BNP as far right it is upsetting to the people on the right of centre as they are outside anything on the right. Their views are unacceptable full stop.

“Some people in the Labour party consider themselves to be socialist and someone who considers themselves a socialist would not want to be associated with the Nazis - as wouldn’t anyone in the Conservatives.

“There is no extreme left or right, it’s just extreme racists.”

Dr Frosh was appointed by Hertfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, David Lloyd, to be his number two after the Conservative was elected to the post in November.

She currently paid £20,000 a year for the two-day a week role.

The GP, who also sits on Harpenden Town Council, retweeted the controversial post on January 31 before deleting it.

However a screen shot of the Hitler post on her feed resurfaced on the social network site again this week with some users asking her if it was appropriate for someone her position to be retweeting.

Dr Frosh then reposted the tweet and Hitler picture in her Twitter feed this evening along with an explanation of her actions.

This afternoon she added: “If there are any left wing people offended by it that was not my intention.

“I have a lot of friends in the Labour party and some really lovely people are in the Labour party. Sometimes you cannot put a piece of paper between people in the Labour and the Conservative party. They have more in common than with extreme parties.

“I am very happy with my tweets. It’s just retweets that can be misleading as you have not said what you want to say.”

Oh dear! Yet another example of how the modern mania for tweeting on the internet can get you into trouble with hypersensitive, precious little souls who take everything literally!

The problem is, when you've only got 140 characters it's difficult to make yourself understood. This is why I want nothing to do with tweeting or any such nonsense.

How on earth anyone can make a comment about Adolf Hitler in 140 characters is beyond me. Most people today would read a 2,000-word essay on Nazism and still be incapable of understanding it.

Having looked at the Twitter profile would say that the author is either a raving swivel eyed racist or incredibly naive for not realizing that her tweets and chosen uploaded media (including Hitler thingy and story about HIV drugs for foreigners) would lead her to be viewed as such.

Political polarities are inevitable. The extreme of the right is fascism. The extreme of the left is communism. There are no safety valves- you don't suddenly cease to be right wing because you suddenly wander into xenophobia and racism as a result of your theories- you are a right wing extremist. Thatcher was a xenophobe, she also coined phrases like 'the enemy within' divided and conquered her own nation. She caused the North Of Ireland to tip into anarchy through bloody minded refusal to negotiate, she even had the hubris to say she didn't believe in consensus. Don't forget she also waged imperialist wars- and created toxic banking all as a Conservative and all through right wing ideology. History will reveal her as a misguided crank- socially pathological and a failure who's resonance reverberates through generations....

Well said......there are still people today- including the Laurel & Hardy of our time- Mssrs Blair & Dave- who think she is some kind of Mother Theresa.

Fine if you happened to be a 80s champagne-filled, cigar chomping stock broker but a different story being Joe Public trying to pay a mortgage with an interest rate of 17%!

The idea of this stupid, ignorant, extremist woman being paid £20,000 a year from public money for holding a position of Deputy PCC to "work" just two days a week is utterly unacceptable.
She undermines the whole principle of impartial justice. She also raises the very important question as to why did David Lloyd appoint her as his deputy?
He must have known her personal views. Does he share them?
Back in the 1980s, I knew a Lord Lieutenant of a county (not Hertfordshire). He seemed OK to me but I was introduced to his brother, who - it turned out - was an active member of WISE (Welsh, Irish, Scots and English), an incredibly right-wing group who were ultra-British nationalists. I subsequently learned (through War Plan UK) that in the event of nuclear conflict and the collapse of normal civilian administration in the UK, that an older form of government was to be accessed, involving rule by Royal Proclamation through Lord Lieutenants. When I realised that, my mind went back to that crazy brother of the Lord Lieutenant and I wondered how he would behave towards people of a different political complexion to himself and how he would behave towards "foreigners", especially at a time when Lord Lieutenants would have a literal power of control over Chief Police Constables, who would be tasked with setting up work camps and deciding who received sufficient food to continue working and who would otherwise just be worked to death.
This woman - it seems to me - is out of the same crazy stable as that crazy WISE character.
She is a potential danger to us all and she has seriously undermined the PCC impartiality principle.
I have no hesitation in saying that David Lloyd should sack her and he should also now think very carefully about his own complicity in having appointed her in the first place.
Perhaps Hertfordshire could become the first to hold a new election to elect a new PCC?
