Local community invited to Watford Mencap charity open day
9:25am Wednesday 13th February 2013 in News By Frazer Ansell
The spotlight will fall on the work of Watford Mencap when the charity holds an Open Day on Thursday, February 28.
The event will be held between 2pm and 8pm at the charity’s headquarters at 105 High Street, Rickmansworth. Staff will be on hand to provide help and advice on a range of topics as well as offering free refreshments.
The charity serves south west Hertfordshire and provides a range of services for adults and children with learning disabilities, their parents and carers across.
Lata Rees, Mencap's Senior Co-ordinator of Learning and Leisure, said: "Although we serve a large number in the area, there are so many people who do not know about us as a local charity where they can come for support - hopefully we can reach out to more new people."
During the Open Day people will be able to learn more about the projects Watford Mencap runs including its leisure, after school, day and weekend activities and holiday sessions.
The charity, which celebrated its Diamond anniversary in 2011, also promotes chances to learn new skills and can give support on financial and housing issues.
Watford Mencap was set up in 1951 by carers of people with learning disabilities.
It is an independent local charity affiliated to national Mencap but it has to raise all its own funds.
Lata added: "The Open Day will also be a chance to find out more about volunteering. We have a range of volunteer opportunities and the work can be extremely rewarding.
"We have a great team of staff and volunteers and there is a vibrant and fun atmosphere. They get a lot out of enhancing the quality of life for our clients."
Further inquiries about the open day can be obtained by ringing 0790 1914154.
