A passenger on one of the last trains into London before power cables collapsed in Radlett has described hearing a loud bang, before everyone was evacuated from the carriage.

Martin Stewart, from St Albans, was heading into London to visit an art gallery at 11am this morning.

Shortly after his train left, the overhead power cables in Radlett collapsed, causing the cancellation of all trains between Luton and St Pancras.

The 48-year-old said passengers faced a cold wait before being evacuated from the train via a ladder, and then had to walk down the tracks and onto a replacement coach.

He said: "I don’t know if it was our train or the one ahead which broke the cables, but there was a loud bang and sparks, and then we rolled to a stop.

"When I realised what had happened I resigned myself for a long wait, luckily I had a book in my bag.

"We had to wait about two hours on a cold train, which was getting colder and colder, while I could see reports of snow coming closer to St Albans.

"At 1pm we were evacuated, we had to climb down a wooden ladder which was fine for me, but people with small kids were finding it quite difficult."

Coaches then took Mr Stewart back to St Albans, and he returned home at 2pm.
