Bournehall Primary School pupils create life size igloo for school project

Excited pupils from Bournehall Primary School who built an igloo out of milk cartons are enjoying learning in their new environment as part of their ‘hot and cold’ project.

After coming back from the Christmas holidays, 30 pupils in a year two class began collecting size four pint plastic milk containers.

The whole school were encouraged to bring in used cartons from home to help with the children’s project.

Year two teacher, Sarah Beasley, co-ordinated the challenge and said they do not yet know the total number of igloos collected, as estimating them is part of the children’s project, but it is probably about 400.

Miss Beasley said: "The children go into there and pretend to be arctic explorers - they have got badges and explorer sheets."

Miss Beasley said the igloo can fit four children comfortably and six at a squash.

This is the first time year two have built an igloo, with last year’s topic being about the rainforest.

Miss Beasley added: "We were thinking about reusing, recycling and the environment and we were thinking of a way that would be practical, aswell as putting good use to the materials."

The milk cartons will be recycled when the igloo is taken down.
