Charity SignPost receives grant to aid online presence for youngsters

A charity for young people in Watford has received £100 to buy a digital camera, allowing them to share their experiences of a local counselling service online.

SignPost, a charity for those aged 11-25, supports people to achieve their potential and overcome barriers.

The digital camera will allow photos of events and activities to be uploaded to the group’s website and Facebook. The money came from Hertfordshire County Council’s locality budget.

The only reason I pay taxes is so that councillors can spend them in this way on things I had never given two thoughts to.

Well done councillor, now how can you spend what's left in the grant bucket?

It's hardly breaking the bank MarsLander. The impact could be to engage more young people. Even if it dissuades one individual from an act of vandalism, crime or anti-social behaviour, it has recouped its £100. They should have been given more to the charity, especially in the social networking world most under twenties now actively occupy.

As a pensioner, I've got half a dozen websites, including two on Facebook, and the thought of applying for a grant never occurred to me! Do you think the council would give me some cash towards it? I mean, older people are just as much concerned with social networking as young people, aren't they?

I'm afraid I don't understand the "gimmee, gimmee" philosophy that seems to prevail over everything today. If this group wanted a digital camera, then why couldn't they pay for it themselves out of their funds or have an appeal? A hundred quid isn't a lot. Everybody seems to be walking around with their hand out, looking for the government or council to give them something.

Some of us were brought up in a generation that taught if you wanted something then you worked to earn the money for it, or you did without.

I'm just rather surprised that there are still people aged 11-25 that don't have a phone with a camera on. I don't think I've met one.

You either (mistakenly) believe in giving out tax money to anything that looks like a good or even slightly worthy cause or you don't. I'm with Roy on this.

If you can't get a council grant Roy, and they're being given away like mad right now because we have an election in a few months time, then maybe people like Razor will dip his hand in his pocket. After all, it's only money, isn't it Razor?

Anyone else want a camera? Contact your county councillor before the May elections or you may miss the boat.

In fact, I wouldn't dream of accepting a council grant even if I were to be offered one. I believe in paying my own way! I was simply making the point that I don't believe they should be handed out willy nilly to all who come with the begging bowl.

Roy,

I do hope this doesn't mean that you will go off the rails! ;-)

Razor has warned us what might happen if we don't give out these grants to all and sundry.

I, like you, would not dream of asking for a grant, let alone accept one. It's this council obsession with giving away "free money", and it's stupid. It's stupid normally, but just before an election it borders on criminal in my opinion.
