Horsemeat scandal: Hertfordshire County Council confirms meals on wheels not affected

Meals provided to elderly Hertfordshire residents are not supplied by any of the companies implicated in the horse meat scandal.

DNA tests on suppliers that provide food to Herts Community Meals, which runs the county’s meals on wheels service, have so-far come back 100 per cent clear.

A number of branded beef products and ready meals have been withdrawn from sale in supermarkets after samples tested positive for horse meat while four products have also been removed by a company that supplies school meals.

Colette Wyatt-Lowe, Hertfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for health and adult care, said: "The company which provide meals to Herts Community Meals does not use any of the suppliers implicated by the FSA or other food safety authorities. DNA tests to date that have been carried out by an independent accredited laboratory have been 100 per cent clear.

"We are in regular contact with the company which provide the meals for our meals on wheels service, as well as the Trading Standards authority where the company is based.

"We have been advised that the company is constantly reviewing the situation and acting appropriately, and that Trading Standards is satisfied with the actions it is currently taking.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely."

Many older people receiving meals on wheels probably ate horse meat during World War II anyway when there wasn't much choice and it didn't do them any harm.

My son who lived in France for a few years tells me the French are quite used to it. I remember when I had the occasional flutter at the races I backed a few horses that OUGHT to have been eaten!

I don't know whether they still do, but didn't Sainsbury's used to stock alligator meat and ostrich?

Roy,

for many it is a case of what it is. For many more I suspect it's a case of where it's been and what it's been injected with.

County Council, what about school meals?

NHS, what about hospital meals?

Care homes?

I agree with Mars; it isn't the fact it is horse that bothers me. I've eaten all sorts of things that on paper sound a lot worse, such as prawns who hoover the sea-bed eating fish pooh. They taste great in a Chow Mien though.

The bit that annoys, is fact fact that if they didn't even know it was horse, how could they possibly tell it was safe horse?
