Watford residents have first glimpse of The Harlequin Centre rebrand

Residents have first glimpse of Harlequin rebrand Residents have first glimpse of Harlequin rebrand

The Harlequin Shopping Centre took its first steps towards rebranding as intu Watford this week.

The familiar signs have come down above its High Street entrence and been replace by ones sporting the new name.

The rebrand, which is part of a national exercise by the shopping centre’s operator Intu, has had a mixed reaction from people in the town.

This week the Watford Observer asked residents what they made of the centre’s new look.

I think the owners are jumping the gun a bit by assuming WFC will be playing in the Champions league next season to make our Italian players feel at home.

Intu Watford ?, what a load of cods.

Why didn't they call it "Watford Shops".

We will all call it the Harlequin, just like the M1 motorway service area is still called "Scratchwood".

"entrence" - is that also part of the re-branding?

TBH I'm still going to call the harliquin so it doesn't really matter.

Just been to the new exciting Intu ( "Hey, lets pop down to the Intu and have a pizza ?", doesnt really wotk does it ?)

The great new "entrence" to the old "harliquin" leads onto one shop on the left and two further up on the right. The rest, i.e. Waterstones and French Connection's now closed outlets are empty as are some 6 or so units inside.

Rebranding ?, they need to get reletting at prices businesses can afford.

I wonder why HMV have chosen to close their shop ?, it always seemed to be doing good business, I wonder if the rent is a factor ?

Looks like Timpsons show repair business is moving down nearer Boots, I suppose this is due to Charter Place being developed ?

There's something to "Intu" it over

saw this for this for the first time yesterday, out the corner of my eye i thought it was a new Sainsbury's, also why did they not put 'Watford' in yellow.

Clearly nobody has thought about how people say sentences:
"I'm going into the Harlequin"
...will now be...
"I'm going into 'intu' Watford"
This does not sound right in any way, let alone causing confusing between if you are just going to Watford (in general) or going to the 'old Harlequin'.

And as others have already said, driving by on the ring road, I thought we had suddenly gained a Sainsbury or Vue cinema in place of where John Lewis was.

It is a known local landmark (as such) and thus you don't just change the name of a landmark, The O2 will always be the 'Dome' for me, just as 'intu Watford' will always be The Harlequin!
