Three members of Dunn family jailed for total of 16 years for plant machinery theft
1:22pm Friday 1st March 2013 in News By Court Reporter
A gang who stole £700,000 worth of heavy plant machinery which was shipped out to Eastern Europe were jailed for more than 20 years today.
Brothers Stacy and Lee Dunn, their father Lee Dunn senior and associate Richard Scales were involved in the theft of JCBs from construction sites all over Hertfordshire.
Prosecutor Simon Wilshire told St Albans crown court said the case concerned the "systematic theft" of heavy plant machinery with a view to exporting it to Eastern Europe. Police identified 17 actual thefts and two attempted thefts, but he said: "The crown consider these 19 instances to be the tip of the iceberg."
More than £700,000 of plant was taken with £309,000 recovered. One example of theft was just before ten past five on the morning of February 28 last year a JCB was stolen from a construction site in Bushey.
Mr Wilshire said the thieves failed to locate a tracking device fitted to it and police were able to establish that around 30 minutes later it was inside a barn.
The police continued to monitor the JCB in the days that followed and then on March 5 last year it became apparent the JCB was on board a Polish articulated lorry travelling on the M25 bound for Dover.
Three locations were used by the thieves to store heavy plant and machinery and change identifying features. When a stolen vehicle was recovered from the Potton End storage site, police found a cigarette butt there, which was found to contain the DNA of Lee Mark Dunn. A contact phone number given by a man when booking a storage facility at Mentmore Boat Yard could be attributed to Lee Paul Dunn. Keys to open padlocks at the site were later found by police in Lee Paul Dunn's VW car.
CCTV cameras also captured on film Stacy Dunn loading a stolen JCB onto a low loader at Fir Tree Farm.
Stacy Dunn, 36, of Cecil Street, Watford was sentenced to 5 years 9 months, his brother Lee Paul Dunn, 32, of Matlock Cresent, Watford, received 5 and a half years, their father Lee Mark Dunn of High Street, Bedmond, Abbots Langley also received 5 and a half years. They had all pleaded not guilty to conspiring to steal between January 1 2011 and March 7 last year, but were convicted by a jury.
Richard Scales, 48, of Alder Close, Park Street, St Albans pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal and possessing 4.5 grams of cocaine which were found in 9 wraps at his home. He was jailed for a total of 4 years 4 months.
Lucy Dunn, 32, who is Lee's wife from Matlock Crescent, South Oxhey, who pleaded not guilty to two offences of transferring criminal property by paying £2,500 into her Barclays Bank account and and later withdrawing the sum of £6,000 from the account. She was found not guilty. Her husband was cleared of transferring criminal property by paying £3,700 into his wife's account For Stacy Dunn, Michael Gomulka said the thefts had been carried out late at night when nobody was about. He said there was no evidence that he had played a leading role.
Andel Singh, for Lee Dunn senior, said he was the sole carer for his wife who is on disability living allowance.
Mr Singh, who also represented Scales, asked for credit for his guilty plea and said he was only involved towards the end of the conspiracy.
For Lee Dunn junior Jonathan Mann said no violence or criminal damage had been used in the thefts.
Judge Stephen Warner said: "This was a sophisticated conspiracy to steal plant and machinery from building sites in Hertfordshire. It was over a period of 14 months and required a significant amount of planning and organisation to arrange to steal the plant, transport it to storage, to disguise it and move it out.
"The items taken were of high value. It was a lucrative trade - a commercial enterprise on a significant scale which had a serious impact on construction projects and the community."
At the end of the sentencing the judge praised the officers in the case for their investigation.

They have been caught, sentenced and are now imprisoned. Let them pay their debt to society - even if some think the penalties are inadequate - and then, hopefully, let us see them going straight after they are released such that they start to make a positive contribution to society instead of the negative contributions they have made so far.

im so pleased that there are people on here to speak up for the dunn's there families will need all there support. it was only theft no one was murdered raped or molested. all those with nasty stuff to say should keep it to them selfs unless you can say it to there faces which i doubt very much.
I accept it is a different league to murder, rape etc. but theft is still a crime, and they have commited numerous crimes over a prolonged period of time and have got what they deserved.
All the neast stuff being said about these thieves is justified.

These men were put away for theft. I know who I would rather be on the loose,

The correct outcome would have been to lock the lot of them up. Society would be a lot better without thieves and paedo's on the streets.
They will be out in less than 2 years. They commited a crime, were caught and are paying the penalty. Thats the way justice works.

Tonight a child is in tears... why? because that child has read these comments that's why.
What was this child's crime? Being born into a family that they did not chose, but that they love with all their heart?
This is a child who knew nothing of criminal activity, who has been brought up to tell the truth, work hard and be honest - a child any mother, father or grandparent would be proud of; just as I am. A child who has never broken the law but who has had to deal with the enormity of what has happened this week. A child who is not only dealing with losing members of their family that they love from their life for a significant period of time, but also having to deal with the shock of finding out the extent of the criminal activity committed and how their life will be affected as a result.
Tonight an inocent child cries as they read how society views their family. A child who is suffering enough already.
From someone goes to work everyday, lives an honest life and who wants to ease the pain of a child.....

These men chose themselves to turn to crime, they knew the potential consequences and they are the only ones to blame for the suffering of their victims and whatever suffering their own families are going through now. Trying to justify their actions, making threats and being abusive is not going to win you the sympathy that you are so obviously looking for.
Its pathetic that in this day and age people try and blame everyone else for their actions, these men are criminals and have been caught and judged for their (known) crimes and are serving the sentence the law deamed appropriate. We don’t know their own feelings on the matter, but their family and friends should not be trying to pass the blame or the resulting consequences onto anyone else.
Trying to justify it as 'just theft' is contemptable and shows no sympathy in turn for their victims. But you're right, its not on that peodophiles can get lighter sentences. But that just means peodophiles should have longer sentences not that the 'Dunn men' have been treated too harshly.
If you don’t like this then tell your men not turn to crime in the future. That way they wont go back to prison in the future, you wont feel the need for sympathy (nor will there be any victims who deserve it far far far more) and we wont have an opportunity to be delighted that they as criminals have been caught and are doing time. This means that any person who is convicted three times of serious offences like the ones committed here is then jailed FOR LIFE - with no possibility of parole - EVER.
Based on this criterion, these men - and their families - can count themselves fortunate to be living in a country with such soft sentencing.

You should be thanking your lucky stars the courts didn't come after the missing money. You'd probably be homeless, and then you'd really have something to moan about. Of course the insurance companies will get back the £400,000 (that we know about) by increasing premiums to honest, hard working people. These men stole from as all.
Of course the family would argue all that particular cost would not have been incurred if the police hadnt gone after criminals, after all they were 'just' theiving and thats apparently okay according to them

Maybe those threats should be reported too? I believe threats of violence is a criminal matter whilst libel is a civil one so I think I know who'd be in more trouble.
I'm sure its not easy having to deal with family members going to prison, however what dont you understand about them being criminals and deserving their sentence? What do you also not understand about right minded people being happy to see criminals getting what they deserve?
I'm sure its not nice having your family members being called names, but they brought that onto themselves. They arent innocent shrinking violets, they are organised criminals who didnt think twice for the feelings or effects of their crimes on their victims OR on their own family members should they get caught.
Once again the ONLY people you should be directing your anger at are your family members. THEY did the crime and if that makes life hard for you THEY are responsible not us.

But it is also possible they paid the mortgage with it, where the family still live. Or bought a car or two, still in use by the family. Or they all enjoyed some good holidays on the stolen money. That is the reason for my lack of sympathy for the family. I would notice an extra few hundreds of thousands of pounds appearing in my weekly housekeeping budget, but perhaps this family didn't.

If they care so little about their own family's feelings that they are willing to commit major crime and risk prison, why are so many of you asking me, a complete stranger, to care?
Not only are they having an easy time, get off their face on drugs, but they have the chance to be unfaithful too.

We are discussing what is now legal fact, their guilt has been proven. Where is the scare mongering please? And nothing facist or weird about being happy to see criminals getting their just desserts. What's weird is how you obviously have no clue why these men don’t deserve sympathy and how the words of their family members and friends have further alienated them/you all! What's weird is that there appears to be a sub culture in our land that believes not only that a life of crime is a commendable profession but that if caught criminals should be given sympathy for having failed in their endeavours and who are shocked that they should end up in prison! That’s just not normal.
We 'need' crime, not laughed so much in quite some time! Tinged with sadness of course (see previous post). I'm assuming you're serious with that? What next, we need heart disease so that doctors have something to do? We need horsemeat in our burgers so that lab scientists can have work finding out what unknown delights are in our food? We need wars so that people can be employed making bullets? We need more Chernobyl's so that wide areas of land become unfit for human habitation which allows the local flora and fauna to grow in peace and for said flora and fauna to be allowed to mutate into new species? Its logic of sorts, just hugely flawed.
As to no one getting hurt, maybe not physically (but that might change given all the lovely threats some of you lot have bandied about) but businessess and individuals (and their associated co workers, employees, families etc) will have suffered. I run a business, if some of my equipment gets stolen yes I'll be insured for the actual equipment but not for the lost income and its not like the insurers pay out the next day is it.
Does everyone deserve sympathy? I would actually have some for the family if they hadnt come on here trying to claim as you are 'no harm done' or that the Dunn men were being harshly treated and that their actions were just some jolly jape gone wrong. The people that deserve the sympathy in this instance are those they stole from, no one else.

Reminds me of a humourous story I heard years ago. A spate of similar "thefts" were happening around central Scotland in the mid 80s. It transpired that some gang stole equipment from a company that was under "protection" from a few notorious characters of the Glasgow underworld. I would presume the debt would have been passed on and spent either most of their lives in hiding or are now "embalmed" within the flyover supports of the M8 motorway lol.

Lets get this straight, they are convicted criminals and we have every right to express our feelings at the fact they have been caught and are being punished. I am under no illusion that this must be a hard time for the family, but, and it’s a critical point this, if the fact they are in prison and if the fact that people are happy about criminals being behind bars (I don’t know these men, my feelings are at seeing justice being done in general terms) and if the families feeings are so important then the blame for ALL the families suffering lies with the men themselves.
I certainly would have more sympathy for the families if so many hadnt come on here trying to justify the crimes, trying to make out the men have been hard done by and that crime is okay. There is no justification, they are not being hard done by and NO crime is NOT okay. That is a universally accepted fact as is the fact that if you do commit a crime there is an associated punishment for it if/when caught. These men were well aware of that, they chose to take the chances, they lost. As the saying goes if you cant do the time don’t do the crime, by extention if you don’t want your family to suffer also don’t do the crime.
WFC007, we are not talking about them as if they do not exist. We are talking about them because they are very real and have committed very real crimes and are currently residing in a very real prison. Something that has been brought up a few times but never commented on by these mens F&F's is that for all the sympathy they were trying to gain (I think they've given up on that now) not once have they expressed any sympathy for the real victims here, the people they stole from. Indeed all the comments that have been made by F&F's are basically along the lines of these men have done nothing wrong and that no one has suffered. That is not true and quite frankly do people with that kind of attitude deserve any sympathy themselves?

I don’t agree with the personal comments being made against children etc. but some of the Dunn mens supporters have come on here claiming that crime isnt that bad, that they have been harshly treated in comparison to totally unrelated crimes, threats have been made and so on. Those posters quite rightly were shot down for talking rubbish. And not once has anyone on the Dun mens side expressed sympathy for their victims, not once
You point out yourself that your family member is an adult, they knew what they were doing, they did what they did of their own free choice showing no regard for anyone else. If the posters are to believed they have also lied and hidden not just activities but profits of their criminal acts from their family. So whilst its great that their families show loyalty to them,of the comments are to be believed they showed no loyalty or thought for their families themselves. All I can say once again is all the repurcussions for their actions fall on them. If this is a hard time for the family, that is down to them not us.
