Radlett rail freight: Petition reaches 10,000 signatures
Determined campaigners who have been petitioning against a rail freight terminal being built at the former Radlett Aerodrome have 'cracked' the 10,000 mark and will have their five minute debate at Hertfordshire County Council on March 26.
Action group STRiFE, who set up the petition, have been collecting signatures since January 3.
The petition asks the Council not to sell the land located between Park Street and London Colney, to the developer HelioSlough.
Cathy Bolshaw, co-ordinator for STRiFE, said: "We have cracked the 10,000 mark, which is fantastic and we are really pleased."
Exceeding 10,000 signatures automatically gives STRiFE five minutes to speak at meeting of the Full Council at the end of March, something which has never happened before in Hertfordshire.
Cathy said: "We have made history so far as Hertfordshire County Council are concerned.
"Now, we are just looking forward to the debate," she said, "everyone is welcome."

Lets hope that the nimbies are sent on their way and we get the hundreds of jobs that this area desperately needs,
Here is an idea - Do what a large section of society had to do in Thatcher's 1980s and grow a pair and relocate hundreds of miles away from their roots to find work.
Jobs shouldn't come to people, people must go to jobs (there's more than enough to go around).
Society has for too long demanded lives of easiness and privilege.
Life is hard - deal with it.

Can I also add, if these people have paid top dollar to mortgage their house (I believe Radlett to be quite an affluent area), then they are entitled for the right to a bit of peace and quiet - an Englishman's home should still be his castle after all.

In addition, the overwhelming majority of local people in 'this area' do not want this development, even if it does mean local jobs, since it will undoubtedly mean a huge increase in noise, light pollution, traffic and so on. Why is it not up to us to decide the relative importance that we attach to local jobs versus the local environment?
