A Watford school has been given a "good" rating by Ofsted for the first time in its history.

Alban Wood Primary School and Nursery, in the Brow, was visited by the school’s inspectorate in February and the report was published last week.

It said the school was "good" in all four areas of inspection, achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, leadership and management, where it had previously been satisfactory.

The inspector reported: "Pupils’ behaviour in lessons and around the school helps to generate harmony and a sense of purpose.

"They are very positive about their learning and keen to do well. Regular, accurate and thorough analysis of assessment information identifies where individuals are in danger of missing their targets.

"This enables the school to focus support sharply on those who need it."

The report was particularly praising of the school’s headteacher, Rachel Kirk.

It said: "The headteacher is very ambitious for the school and has high expectations of staff and pupils. Her determined leadership has been instrumental in recent improvements.

"The headteacher’s successful drive to improve teaching has led to accelerating progress and rising attainment across the school."

Ms Kirk, who joined the school in 2011, said: “We are delighted that Ofsted have recognised the tremendous work put in by our whole school team – staff, governors, pupils and parents – to ensure that the education we offer is good in all respects.

“We are all proud to belong to the Alban Wood community, and I am privileged to work with such talented staff and wonderful families. We are very keen to continue to improve our school and aspire for outstanding.”
