New apprenticeships and work experience opportunities will become available to youngsters in Hertsmere due to a new grounds maintenance deal signed by the borough council.

The seven-year contract with John O’Conner Ltd was renewed on March 1.

The company, which is responsible for the upkeep of many of the country’s parks, gardens and open spaces, is involved with the government’s ‘Extended Work Experience’ programme, in partnership with Jobcentre Plus.

John O’Conner’s Managing Director, Matthew O’Conner, said: "As part of the new contract, we will be providing staff development through work-based diploma training at levels 2 and 3, as well as funding management training for ourselves and our client."

Councillor Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for the environment, added: "We have a number of award-winning parks, areas of outstanding beauty and nature reserves and our contractors have played no small part in helping us and our army of volunteers to achieve this."
