Peter Cooper has sent in these post cards from his collection.
He said: “I wonder if you might print the postcard of World War I (captioned 'Among the ruins', above) to see if any reader can identify where it was taken.
“It’s stamped on back “H R Cull, 169 St Albans Road” and has ink writing on the front which reads ‘Among the ruins’. I doubt if Cull went to France to take this photo so I think it must be local.”
Of the other postcards here, one shows Louis Paulhan – the winner of £10,000 offered by the Daily Mail to the first person to fly an aeroplane from London to Manchester – passing over Watford just over 103 years ago, on April 27, 1910.
Do you recognise the first postcard above? Please write and let us know.
The Watford Observer Nostalgia pages published this week (edition dated May 10), including the strange tale of a 'savage parson' on the bypass, will appear online from Thursday at 4pm.
