A member of the Green Party has become the chairman of Watford Borough Council for the first time in history.

Councillor Steve Rackett was passed the ceremonial chains and robes at a ceremony last night.

He said: "Whatever our religious beliefs, ethnicity, gender or sexuality as people, we are united by our common humanity.

"As councillors in Watford, whatever our political differences, we are united by our commitment to democracy and civic values.

"My theme for the year will therefore one of respect under the title Watford United because we can do more for each other when we come together to solve our common problems and the challenges of 21st century living.

"My aim is to recognise and promote respect and tolerance, civic involvement and community participation."

Councillor Rackett has taken up the position from Councillor Shirena Counter.

During his year he intends to support two charities - the Watford Community Fund and Watford’s woman centre Behind Closed Doors.
