A grieving family has made an emotional plea for witnesses after a young father died from the head injuries he sustained during an attack at Bushey Costco.

Prasanna Arulchelvam passed away yesterday at St Mary’s Hospital, London, 11 days after being found in the car park of the outlet store in Hartspring Lane.

Today devastated family members paid tribute to the Sri Lankan-born 34-year-old, who leaves behind a wife and young son.

His brother and business partner, Uday, said: “Everyone is heart broken. We don’t have words to describe how good he was.

“I don’t want this devastation to happen to any other family. I don’t want this to happen again.

“We want to find out what happened to our brother. If you go to Costco on a Sunday you usually can’t park because it is so busy. Someone must have seen something.”

Family members described Mr Arulchelvam, who was also known as "Nick", as a hard-working, kind brother who was generous with his siblings as well as a loving father and husband.

He came to England from Sri Lanka in 1998 and after working for Tesco as a manager he opened his own shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, with his younger brother Uday.

He then went on to open another shop in Sittingbourne, Kent, and was looking at opening a third Southampton.

Four years ago he married Shayanthy, 30, and the pair lived in Grandfield Avenue with their two-year-old son Pranav Arul.

Uday said: “He just wanted the best for his son and he fought very hard for it.”

On Sunday, May 26, Mr Arulchelvam went to Costco to buy cigarettes for his Kent store in his silver Ford transit van at around 2.45 pm.

On the day he was wearing a blue and white polo shirt with a red collar, jeans and brown shoes.

Detectives are still trying to piece together the events that led to Mr Arulchelvam receiving the fatal injuries, including a fractured skull.

It is currently believed he may have fallen from a moving white van.

Detective Chief Inspector Jerome Kent, from the Major Crime Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in a young man sadly losing his life.

"His family have been left devastated and bewildered by what has happened. We are still trying to ascertain the exact details as to what happened in the car park of Costco, prior to our victim falling from the van which has resulted in him sustaining fatal injuries.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have been in the Costco car park, shortly before or just after 2.45 pm on Sunday May 26 who may have any information all to come forward.

"Did you see a white van driving around the car park prior to the incident, or did you witness it driving away from the scene as it made off from the car park and drove off down Hartspring Lane.”
