Two former borough councillors have had a tree planted in a Garston playing field in recognition of their efforts to improve and preserve it.

Alan and Ellie Burtenshaw, who represented Woodside ward on Watford Borough Council for a combined total of 33 years, were instrumental in founding the Friends of Woodside Playing Fields.

On Wednesday, June 5 the pair took part in a small ceremony with parks staff where a Copper Beech tree was planted in recognition of all the hard work and time they had devoted to the playing fields.

Watford Borough Council Park staff recently said thank you to the two former Woodside councillors who were instrumental in founding the Friends of Woodside Playing Fields.

Mrs Burtenshaw served on the borough council until 2010 and Mr Burtenshaw until this year.

Dave Jenkins, Watford Borough Council's parks manager, said: "Alan and Ellie were founder members of the playing field’s ‘friends’ and have helped guide and run the group for over 20 years.

"Whatever the weather they attended as many of the friends group’s monthly events as possible. They played a significant part in helping Woodside achieve its prestigious Green Flag award. They will both be missed on their retirement."
