A plan to double the intake of new pupils in Croxley Green could be given the green light next week despite attracting strong opposition from parents, governors and local residents.

Hertfordshire County Council is due to decide on Monday (June 17) whether to proceed with a plan to expand Yorke Mead Primary School’s intake of new pupils by 30 pupils from one form of entry to two.

The Conservative-controlled council has drawn up a £30 million scheme to head off a looming shortage of primary school places in the county.

At Monday’s meeting, members of the county council’s cabinet will be updated on the progress of the proposals and will be asked to decide whether or not to proceed with publishing statutory notices of the expansion of four schools in the county.

Of the four, Yorke Mead is the only school to raise objections although the governing body indicated it regretted doing so while supporting the need for expansion.

If approved the increased admissions would be implemented from September 2014 but school governors oppose the plan due to concerns over the core facilities in the school.

Governors argue they need improved facilities such as a hall and dining room, specialist subject classrooms, entrance and lobby, and staff room to cope with extra pupils.

The report notes: "There are clear concerns about the expansion of this school at this stage.

"The governing body disagrees with the proposal due to its concern over the accommodation needs of the school, while being supportive of the principle of expanding the school."

A consultation involving all governors, parents and staff at Yorke Mead as well as residents living nearby and representatives from other bodies.

The results show that more than 65 per cent of the 119 respondents opposed the change.

Those consulted also expressed concerns as to the impact of additional vehicles as parents pick up and drop off their children, how the increased pupil numbers would alter the ethos of the school and the disruption building work would cause to lessons while facilities are expanded.

In a report Pauline Davis, Hertfordshire County Council’s head of school planning, said: "There continues to be a real and pressing need to provide primary school places across Hertfordshire.

"Not providing the premises to allow additional places to be offered will mean that very young children may be forced to access places some considerable distance from their homes."

Nobody from Yorke Mead Primary School was available to comment on the consultation.
