An Oxhey woman organised a charity fun day and barbeque in memory of her uncle over the weekend.

Sarah Newrick, 24, Capel Road, and her mother, Marcia Quinn, were moved to volunteer their time for the suicide prevention charity, CALM, after Miss Newrick's uncle committed suicide in October 2011.

After the event, Miss Newrick said: "It was really good. We have done a count and think we have raised more than £1,300 with more donations to come. It was so overwhelming to see the support we received."

The Rifle Volunteer Pub, of Villiers Road, hosted the event on Saturday, June 29. Visitors were encouraged to enjoy a barbeque, a bouncy castle, face painting, games and competitions for children, and a cake stall.

Over 200 people turned up to support the cause and Miss Newrick said: "People stayed on into the night for a meal. Some of them took their children home and then came back again."

CALM, which stands for Campaign Against Living Miserably, is a charity that focuses predominantly on men and offers a helpline support service.

Miss Newrick said: "When my uncle passed away, my mum got in contact with them and we now both raise money for the charity. We decided to put our time into fundraising for them and have been working with them for over a year now."

This was the first year that CALMfest was organised in aid of CALM, but Miss Newrick said they are hoping to make it an annual event.
