Watford Fire Station Watch Commander Derek MacLeod said: “We were called to the Harvester following reports of a building fire and, en route, we received further information that people were inside the property.
“When we arrived we saw flames coming out of the first floor windows. We could see that it was a well developed fire. Staff were already outside the building but there were initial indications that staff were still inside upstairs in the chef’s accommodation.
“We used two fire engines from Watford Station and one from Rickmansworth, and we immediately sent inside four firefighters and two hosereels to put out the fire and search for people.
“Fortunately, one of the Rickmansworth firefighters saw two staff running down the fire escape, and they made their way to safety.
“At that point there was nobody left in the building and we put the fire out, which we did quite effectively.”
A Harvester spokeswoman said: “A fire broke out at the restaurant resulting in damage to the manager’s accommodation.
"Fortunately no one was hurt, and the business was not open at the time. The fire brigade are investigating the cause of the fire and as yet we have no further details.”
