A fire that ripped through a flat above the Harvester restaurant in Croxley Green has prompted Hertfordshire County Council to issue a warning about leaving candles unattended.

Fire broke out in accommodation above the family restaurant on Thursday, August 15 with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue identifying an unattended candle as the cause of the blaze.

The restaurant sustained water damage partly due to a pipe which burst during the fire.

The water damage was immediately repaired and the restaurant was open for business as usual the following day.

People using candles are advised to keep them a safe distance from curtains, furniture and flammable materials, ensure there is at least one metre between the flame and the surface above it, ensure you have a working smoke detector and never leave a candle unattended.

The county council’s cabinet member for community safety, Richard Thake, said: “I would urge people to take extra care when using candles, and be especially vigilant to make sure that burning candles are kept well away from curtains and other soft furnishings.

"Fires caused by candles can be devastating and once started, can take hold of a room at an alarming speed.

“If you don’t already own one, get a smoke alarm and remember to test it every week. If a fire starts, it could be your only warning.

“Where possible, consider using battery-powered alternatives to candles, which create a similar effect without the danger.”
