A mobile phone company presented a £1,000 cheque to an Abbots Langley resident who campaigns for children with heart conditions last week.

The People’s Operator (TPO) raised the funds in just one week for the Children’s Heart Federation (CHF).

Alex Smith and her six-year-old daughter, Georgina, accepted the cheque last Thursday on behalf of the charity. Georgina has a heart condition that went undiagnosed for two years and her mother got involved with the charity to campaign to make pulse oximetry screening, which picks up heart and lung defects, part of the general health checks that are already carried out on new born babies.

Despite the fact that Congenital Heart Disease is the most common birth defect, affecting over 5,000 children in the UK each year, only a third are detected before birth.

Samantha Johnson, from the Children’s Heart Federation said: "We are very grateful to the People’s Operator for their generosity. They are a wonderful company that helps many charities like CHF raise vital funds. Their donation will help our charity to provide life-changing services and campaign on behalf of families with children with heart conditions across Hertfordshire and the rest of the country."
