A Bushey priest says "sheer determination and overwhelming support" helped spur him on to complete an exhausting 24 hour musical challenge.

The Rector of Bushey began the music marathon, in which he played the piano and organ, at 4pm on Sunday.

Father Neil Kelley, who took part in the challenge in St James's Church, in High Street, said: "The support from people throughout the 24-hour period really was tremendous. I don't think I would have got through the whole thing without their support."

The event was in aid of church funds, and Father Kelley said recent counts of the collection indicate the fundraiser has brought in more than £5,000.

Supporters gathered in St James's Church at various times throughout the challenge, with many bringing their own music and instruments to assist Father Kelley.

The Rector of Bushey said: "I think just sheer determination and the overwhelming support of a large number of people, both from the three congregations and also from friends and neighbours in the local community as well, kept me going."

Refreshments and a cooked breakfast were offered at the church.

More than 400 people attended St James's at 4pm on Monday to see Father Kelley complete the challenge.
