Bushey teacher, Panos Fellas, set for first marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support
A Bushey teacher is embarking on his first marathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support next month.
Panos Fellas, of Mill Way, recently took up long distance running with his wife, Katerina, after joining the Watford Joggers club.
The head of science at the Purcell School, in Aldenham Road, has been training hard over the past few weeks.
He said: "I feel much happier and healthier since I’ve been running and I’m looking forward to the marathon next month."
On Sunday, he and Mrs Fellas completed the 20 mile hilly Dunstable Downs Challenge in just over four hours, which he says was a "wonderful" experience, but one which he found very difficult.
Nonetheless, the 51-year-old says he is feeling confident about completing the marathon on October 6.
Mr Fellas, who has been working at the Purcell School since before it relocated to Bushey in 1997 from Harrow, will be running to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support after one of the runners at his jogging club had to pull out of the challenge.
He said: "I am really looking forward to it and I hope to raise as much money as possible."
While this may be his first marathon, Mr Fellas has been fundraising for charities for many years.
Originally from Cyprus, Mr Fellas has raised money for Roma Education, which helps travelling children living in a settlement in Greece.
For now, however, Mr Fellas’ efforts are focused on his upcoming challenge.
