Police to investigate suspicious fire at Watford Cars in Rickmansworth Road
An investigation into a fire at a Watford car showroom last night has been handed over to police over suspicions it was started deliberately.
Two crews from Watford Fire Station were called to the blaze at Watford Cars, in Rickmansworth Road, at around 7pm yesterday.
Watch commander Dave Elliott said the smoke could be seen as far off as Watford Grammar School for Boys.
He said: "It looks like someone deliberately set fire to some cardboard rubbish which had been left out for recycling underneath the old carwash.
"We got there as the fire was getting to the plastic cladding on the carwash. We got there just in time. It could have been a lot more severe."
Two firefighters wearing breathing masks extinguished the flames using a hose reel.
Mr Elliott said the blaze had left damage to the plastic cladding on the old car wash.
He added: "We have handed the investigation over to the police".
