Hertsmere Borough Council to host event to mark National Older People’s Day
Hertsmere Borough Council will be marking National Older People’s Day with an event next month.
The special day, which lands on Tuesday, October 1, aims to celebrate older people, raise awareness of their achievements and tackle the neglect and disregard they can encounter.
The council will be supporting the initiative by holding a celebration event at Fairway Hall, in Brook Close, in Borehamwood between 10am and 1pm.
Hertsmere residents of any age are welcome to go along. Organisations including Age UK, Jewish Care, Herts Mind Network, Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service, Herts Fire and Rescue, Hertsmere Leisure and Herts Sports Partnership will be attending the event.
Councillor Brenda Batten, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and health with responsibility for older people, said: "People are living longer these days and nearly a quarter of the population will be aged 65 and over by 2035 so we really need to make sure the older generation is looked after and catered for.
"Too often older people are disregarded in society so this event is not only a celebration of what they contribute, but it will also help us challenge and tackle the negative attitudes that can exist about them.
"It is also an opportunity for us to ensure that we are doing all we can for older people in Hertsmere and that they are getting the most out of life."
Councillor Batten added: "Most of us have a parent or grandparent, colleague or friend, who they look up to for advice and support.
"Older People’s Day is all about bringing older and younger people together to create mutual respect and better understanding. So make sure you don't take the older people in your life for granted, bring them along to this event and get involved."
