Paralympian Derek Derenalagi and Watford's mayor, Dorothy Thornhill, show support for Peace Hospice at bank re-launch
Paralympian Derek Derenalagi and Watford mayor Dorothy Thornhill reached for their mobiles to text vote for the Peace Hospice in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund.
Their votes will help the Peace Hospice secure a £3,000 grant from Lloyds and prompted other customers in the Watford High Street branch to pick up their mobiles and support their favourite good cause.
Derek and Dorothy had been invited to cut the ribbon at the Lloyds official re-launch on Wednesday but were also keen to show their support for the Peace Hospice.
Voting for the Peace Hospice, one of the shortlisted nominated groups will take place until Friday, November 1.
The two causes with the most votes when voting closes will benefit from the funds.
Derek, from Bushey said: "I am definitely voting for the Peace Hospice."
The former soldier who lost his legs on a tour of duty in Afghanistan, and made his transition from the battlefield to the athletics field, now makes his living from public speaking and inspiring others with his story.
He said: "I talk to patients and carers and encourage people to fight back and remind people it is not the end of the road. "
Derek’s motivational words were also offered to Peace Hospice patients who cope with life limiting illnesses: "Illness or injury, you can fight on.
"It is a tough journey and we all need support", he said.
Derek was joined by local cake maker Avril Reid from "Cakes by Dimple" who offered Lloyds customers a sweet treat in return for a donation to the hospice.
Avril said: "One customer gave me £10 for a cake. That will help the Peace Hospice. I am not just making cakes for them but I am voting for them."
