Labour's european parliament representative for East of England, Richard Howitt, joins in with Westfield Children’s Centre pumpkin harvest
European parliament representative Richard Howitt visited a gardening club in Watford and helped harvest a season crop of pumpkins.
The Labour MEP for the East of England was shown around the Westfield Children’s Centre in Croxley View on Friday.
The centre offers support to about 1,100 children aged under five, and their families in the Holywell and Vicarage Road communities.
There he met members of a food gardening club, run by local community-interest company Farming for All, which this year received a small community grant from the EU.
Mr Howitt said: "Farming for All’s gardening club in the Westfield Children’s Centre allotment gives high-rise parents and their children a taste of home grown and right now their very own pumpkins for Halloween.
"I’m particularly pleased today to hear of the fantastic early intervention help and support to young families at the Westfield Children’s Centre which was one of the first Sure Start centres in Hertfordshire - there are now six in Watford and 82 across the county.
"It’s quite obvious from the successful centres here in Hertfordshire that children get the best start in life when the community comes together, and they need our backing."
