North Watford burglar claims he was chasing fictional burglar through woman's home in Middle Way
A burglar who walked in on a woman while raiding her home conned his way out of the situation by claiming he was chasing another fictional burglar he had seen breaking into the property.
Hertfordshire Constabulary said the moustachioed suspect bumped into the resident while she was watching TV at home in Middle Way, north Watford, at around 8.35pm on Friday.
Police said when challenged he stated he was chasing "a ginger boy" who had come through her back window that he had caught him.
He told the resident the police were coming and asked her go into the back room to make sure nothing was missing.
After the victim had left the room, her purse was taken from the sideboard.
The male suspect was described as white, between 30 and 40 years old, 5 ft 3 tall with a stocky build. He had short wavy hair, which was pushed back, and a black moustache. He was said to have spoken with what police described as "a Watford accent" and was wearing a dark blue fleece, zipped up at the front at the time.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Hertfordshire Constabulary via its non-emergency number 101 and quote reference C4/13/2214.
