South Oxhey woman, Gemini Lawton, heads for Miss Galaxy Universe
A South Oxhey woman will be competing in Miss Galaxy Universe 2013 in what is an accumulation of more than two years’ training in a bid to increase her confidence and overcome her fear of being stared at.
Gemini Lawton, who lives just off Heysham Drive, is a contestant in the fitness and beauty competition, and will be one of about 120 women competing on Saturday, October 26.
The 36-year-old, who will be a competitor in the fitness model category, said she started working out early in 2011 because she was unhappy with her "skinny but wobbly" body.
She began following fitness videos at home as she was "too embarrassed to join a gym".
Now, after years of accumulating fitness t-shirts she gained through completing the various workouts, she is a contestant in the second Miss Galaxy Universe.
Ms Lawton, who wakes up at 5am everyday to exercise, said: "To have made such progress in the past couple of years, I’m really proud of myself.
"I’m not a body builder and I’m not trying to become one. I just want to boost my confidence to not feel so insecure. I feel much happier since I began training and I just want to get over my fear of being stared at."
Ms Lawton, who works for a debt management company, said she entered the Miss Galaxy Universe competition to make friends in the fitness world and to boost her confidence.
Two years ago, she set up her own YouTube Channel under the name FitEbonyGem in order to educate people about ways to train.
She said: "I opened up my own channel to show the good and the bad, the easy and the hard. To show people what training is really like."
Miss Galaxy Universe will take place at The Hawth Theatre, in Crawley, and will have a number of rounds, including fitness trials, bikini parades and a ball gown show.
The latter has already got Ms Lawton very excited. She said: "I have my floor-length evening gown and hope I look like a fairytale princess when wearing it."
Asked what she thinks her chances are of winning, Ms Lawton said: "I don’t think I have any, but I’m not in it for that. I will certainly give it my all and it has been a great overall experience.
"I am in the best shape of my life at the moment so as far as I’m concerned this already makes me and all of us Galaxy Girls winners."
