Kings Langley School has plans to undergo a major redevelopment which will be completed in 2016.

An application has been submitted to Dacorum Borough Council for the redevelopment of the existing secondary school, to increase its capacity from 1,085 pupils to 1,180 pupils, to help meet a forecasted shortage of secondary school places in Kings Langley, as well as improve the quality of facilities at the school.

Gary Lewis, head teacher at Kings Langley School, said: "Work on the redevelopment of Kings Langley School under the Priority School Building Programme is progressing very well and we remain on course for delivery of the new school by autumn 2016.

"The Education Funding Agency (EFA), who are procuring this work on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE), have shortlisted three bidders to provide tenders. This followed a strong response from the market to bid for the scheme, which includes six other secondary schools in Herts, Luton and Reading. The three bidders invited to submit tenders are Morgan Sindall, Wates, Interserve Kajima."

The planning application states that many of the original buildings appear to be in very poor condition, with the exception of the newer library and adjacent block and the music room extension. The buildings are generally a mixture of one and two storeys, with the exception of the technology block, which is three storeys.

The area of the school site will remain the same after the work is done.

Mr Lewis added: "The next key milestone will see the selected bidder chosen, which we expect to happen by Easter next year, and work is anticipated to commence on the new build school late 2014. We are very excited that the project is moving at pace and look forward to moving into our new school in 2016."

Recent discussions have taken place with Dacorum Borough Council officers and the Education Funding Agency regarding redevelopment of the site for education purposes. These discussions suggest that the borough council is keen to support proposals that will result in improved educational facilities in the Borough of Dacorum and Kings Langley.

Subject to being able to demonstrate very special circumstances, the authority may be prepared to support a departure from Green Belt policy. A number of issues will need further consideration and will need to be examined in the context of any planning application that is submitted.
