Santas dashing through the streets of Northwood managed to raise more than £1,500 for a hospice.

The Michael Sobell Hospice’s Santa Dash took place on Saturday.

The hospice, which is located at Mount Vernon Hospital, in Rickmansworth Road, provides specialised end-of-life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers.

Participants were able to get ready and warmed up in Northwood Methodist Church, in Oaklands Gate, where there was also a carol concert.

A total of 88 Santa Dashers of all ages took part in the event, which kicked off when ex-England and Middlesex cricketer, Angus Fraser, rang the bell outside the Michael Sobell Hospice Shop, in Green Lane, at 11am.

The one-mile route finished at the Michael Sobell Hospice where Jimmy the Bear rewarded dashers with a medal and refreshments.

Organiser, Laura Kaye, said people of all ages took part in the event, which really brought the community together.

She said: "It was a really great community event. All ages were there and all different kinds of supporters were there. Some people turned up on the day because they have a particularly close connection to the hospice, others just want to support the work we do.

"It was great to see so many children getting involved. Although they weren’t in Santa gear, we made sure they had flashing lights, reindeer and Christmas pudding outfits."

The first runner reached the hospital at 11.16am, with all fundraisers making it back within 45 minutes.

Ms Kaye added: "We do it every year and it’s become a great annual event. It was really lovely and I think all the Santas dashing round the streets raised awareness of the hospice.

"Loads of people were stopping to look at what was going on."

It costs £6,000 a day to run the hospice and maintain levels of care. Adults were able to register for £10, which included the Santa costume, and under 16’s had to be accompanied by an adult.
