Part of the M1 was closed off last night after a car aquaplaned into a crash barrier on the M1 near Watford.

Police imposed a rolling road block following the accident involving a bronze Toyota Prius near Junction 5 southbound on the motorway at around 10.30pm.

Paramedics treated the driver and passengers in the car for minor injuries.

Firefighters were also called but stood down after everyone in the vehicle was able to get out unaided.

Watch commander Chris Merritt, from Garston Fire Station, who attended, said: “Drivers should be aware of the danger when there is surface water of aquaplaning.

"That’s basically were the wheels are lifted from the surface and the driver loses control.”
