On Monday morning, in Willesden Tunnel on the London and North-Western Railway, a startling discovery was made of what appeared to be an infernal machine [NOTE: This is an archaic phrase for what these days we'd call this a booby trap].

The machine was found on the down line by the workmen when the usual inspection, which is carried out twice daily, was being made.

There is some doubt as to whether a hoax was intended. Close enquiries were, however, at once instituted, the railway authorities attaching due importance to the discovery.

This incident should tend to assure the public that the daily inspection of the London and North-Western system is made with great thoroughness as the machine was small in size and was found in a dark tunnel.
