A headteacher has described a Chorleywood school as going from “strength to strength” after it was upgraded to a “good” rating by Ofsted inspectors.

Rebecca Roberts’s comments come as Chorleywood Primary School improved on the "satisfactory" rating it received at its last inspection.

Mrs Roberts said: "We’ve worked really hard to improve the quality of teaching and learning. We have very high expectations and challenge all pupils, regardless of their starting points.

"We look at what we can do to support the children to ensure there isn’t an opportunity for them to slip through the net."

The Stag Lane school’s latest report was published earlier this month, following a visit on November 12 and 13.

The inspectors report said: "Good teaching and pupils’ positive attitudes to learning enable pupils to attain standards of work which are well above those usually found."

Pupils’ behaviour, safety and the standard of leadership from the headteacher were also commended.

The school was last inspected in 2011, when it was deemed to be "satisfactory".

Inspectors said that the school, which has 240 pupils aged between three and 11 years old, is not yet "outstanding" as more progress could be made with children’s writing.

In order for the school to improve further, the report said more focus should be place on children’s writing quality, particularly for boys in the younger classes.

Inspectors said regular opportunities should be provided for students to write independently so they can practise their punctuation and grammatical skills in longer, high-quality pieces of work.

Mrs Roberts, who has been headteacher since June 2010, said: "The areas identified for development by Ofsted were the same as those we identified ourselves in our own school plan as those things which needed work."

She added: "Although we progressed in writing and we’re above the national expectations, there is room for improvement compared to how our pupils are doing in maths and reading."

The school was given a day's notice there would be an inspection.

Mrs Roberts said: "We had parents evening the night we were told, but we were ready for them. We were expecting them and we were really pleased they were coming so we could should them how much we’ve improved."

She added: "As a school we’re just really happy that all the hard work we’ve put in has been officially recognised. We don’t want to get complacent in any way and we plan to go from strength to strength."
