The beginning of May saw news and sport collide as the Royal Family visited Leavesden Studios, and Watford FC chased promotion hopes all the way to Wembley.
The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry visited the famous film set for a guided tour and a demonstration of how to perform magic with wands from the Harry Potter films.
Prince William said: “Harry is just excited to see a real life talking owl. I haven’t told him Harry Potter is fictional – so please don’t let the secret out yet.”
The race to the premier league for the Hornets was a much more drawn out affair, after the team narrowly missed out on automatic promotion at the hands of Leeds FC.
Troy Deeney was sent off during the second half of the match meaning he was absent from the first leg of the team’s play-off semi-final with Leicester City.
In the second leg Deeney scored a dramatic last minute goal on the back of a rebounded penalty from Leicester, taking the score to 3-1, and secured the Hornets a crucial promotion decider against Crystal Palace.
However, it wasn’t to be, and the Golden Boys suffered an agonising defeat to Palace, putting them out of the running for another year at least.
In a letter to the fans, Gianfranco Zola, manager, said: “This season is not one which should be remembered by one match.”
Former owner of the club Laurence Bassini reacted slightly differently to the news, sending gloating text messages on the final whistle to deputy group sports editor Frank Smith.
The Watford Observer published the three messages, after editing them slightly due to “extremely poor punctuation”.
Bassini said: “How is the feeling in the town now? Ask Anthony (Matthews, the group sports editor) because for me the feeling is amazing.
“What goes around comes around. This is my happiest memory of Watford. Print this in the paper, Laurence Bassini. I have to go now and open the Champagne. All my love to Watford.”
This text message was followed 20 minutes later by two more.
He said: “Can’t see any Watford fans on telly. They must be in Watford town enjoying the feeling with Anthony.”
And then added: “Put me on your website tonight; every word I have quoted.”
Frank reacted with these lines: “Knowing this man is no longer involved in the club has softened the blow of today slightly. At least Laurence Bassini isn’t in charge of the club anymore.”
Peter Hearn from Sarratt had to walk his daughter down the aisle wearing “an old grey suit” after EasyJet lost his luggage.
His morning suit had been flown to Tenerife instead of the Greek island Kefalonia where his daughter’s nuptials were taking place.
He said: “I would have given Sarah away in my y-fronts or shorts and a t-shirt – I wasn’t going to miss that moment for the world.”
