We were finally treated to decent weather this year, with weeks of sunshine and barely a single threat of “an Indian summer”.
In fact the balmy temperatures were branded “almost too hot” by organisers of Abbots Langley Primary School’s fete, leading to melting cakes and a distinctly toasty Darth Vader.
Tara Chamberlain, event organiser, said: “The adult alcohol tombola went down well as it always does.”
Less sweet was the decision to send 11-year-old Holli McCann home from a school trip to the Isle of Wight after she was found to be flouting a chocolate ban.
Holli’s mum was called and told she needed to pick her daughter up after she broke Bromet Primary School’s “charter” by eating confectionary in a hotel and misbehaving on a beach.
It transpired that a “midnight feast” which Holli and three friends had in their hotel room was under investigated by teachers.
Statements were written by the children and then Holli’s bags were searched for the contraband – including a KitKat, a Fudge bar and a Freddo Frog.
Holli’s mother Yvonne said: “You would have thought they were running an international drug operation from their hotel room.”
