The old adage that “nothing happens in August” was blown out of the water when Prime Minister David Cameron visited Watford with Olympic cyclists Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton.
The trio were promoting bicycles and Mr Cameron said he was hoping to start a “cycling revolution”.
The appearance of Watford’s High Street in the top five most violent streets in the country was rubbished by police, who blamed the “methodology” behind how the figures were calculated.
Hertfordshire Constabulary said the average of 201 violent offences a month was skewed as it was dependent on the number of people living in the area.
Dorothy Thornhill said: “It is not the hell-hole that being fourth on the list makes out.”
Jack Edmunds became Kings Langley School’s first pupil to secure a place at Oxford University.
He said: “I did work pretty hard. I probably worked every night of the week for about two or three hours, sometimes more if I had exams.”
The month ended with the county’s first ever gay pride festival, held in Cassiobury Park. Thousands attended the event, which was two years in the making.
