Watford Observer:

Peter Collins spent all of October wearing a bright pink suit in order to raise money as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Lloyds bank in Garston Parade was held up in October by an armed thug, but keen-eyed pensioner Joan Debbins was having none of the weapon he used.

She said: “I turned around and said ‘that’s a plastic gun’. It was so obvious. I thought he was an idiot. It was the kind of thing you would have bought for your kids.”

The man fled the bank with some cash by pedalling away on a bicycle.

Ms Debbins added: “Everyone is telling me I should have kept my mouth shut.”

A county council review into its much-maligned part-night lighting scheme, where Hertfordshire’s street lights are switched off between midnight and 6am, revealed it had been “a success”.

So there we are then. That’s settled.

Firefighters had to cut a schoolboy from a pair of handcuffs, which he discovered in a teacher’s drawer.

The pupil apparently found the cuffs and put them on himself as a joke, before realising the key to release them was nowhere to be found.

A Watford firefighter said: “The pupil was not hurt, just slightly embarrassed.”

The question of whether we are alone in this infinite universe raised its head in October after a Garston mother spotted a UFO.

Clare Norton said she spotted the floating orb after being woken up by her hungry baby at 5.20am.

She said she thought it was an aeroplane at first but became concerned when the light did not move for 15 minutes.

She added: “I don’t think I am crazy – I know what I saw.”

One thing is certain – it wasn’t a streetlight.
