Torrential rain and high winds caused trees to fall, flooding and road closures across south west Hertfordshire last night.

Police were called to Woodside Road, in Abbots Langley, at 10.51pm to reports that a tree branch had collapsed across the road.

Officers attended the scene and part of the road was closed for Highways to clear away the debris.

Fire crews rescued a man stuck in his car in Green Street, in Chorleywood after the road flooded.

The man called firefighters at around 11pm after he got stuck in his car while water rose around him.

He was escorted to safety by crews from Rickmansworth and Garston.

Police received reports of a collapsed tree on Hempstead Road, near The Grove at 11.25pm.

The tree was completely across the road, and brought down phone cables, resulting in BT maintenance men having to attend the scene.

Hempstead Road was closed at the junction with Courtlands Drive. It was reopened at 4.35am.

Part of Redhall Lane, in Chandlers Cross, had to be conned off after reports that a tree had collapsed in the middle of the road.

Police were called at 11.38pm to the fallen tree, which was near to The Clarendon pub.

Part of the road was closed to allow Highways to deal with the blockage.

A tree is reportedly blocking a pedestrian walkway in South Oxhey after it was blown down in the storm last night.

The fallen tree is covering the pavement that runs along Oakdale Road.

The county’s power cables have also been affected by the storm. So far, 670 UK Power Networks customers have reported that they are without electricity.
