A t 10.30am on Sunday the railway bridge at Park Street carrying the St Albans to Watford line was blown up, leaving a 10ft high pile of rubble on the A5.

The bridge and the single line track have been in use for over 100 years, providing the most direct route between the two towns and serving Park Street, Bricket Wood, North Watford and, more recently, Garston.

Houses had their windows boarded and a high corrugated iron screen was erected to protect the nearest house. A few bricks which missed the screen fell harmlessly in the garden.

The new bridge was already in place beside the old and was moved into its permanent position within a couple of hours, so that normal service was resumed at 5am Monday.
