A new mental health facility has opened in Watford to give patients a "modern, safe and pleasant" setting for the service.

Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust has opened Colne House in Upton Road as part of a new shake-up of mental health services in the county.

The new facility will provide a base for the area’s teams and is part of a drive to treat more patients at home.

Ian Scammell, service line lead for community services in the south west, said: "Colne House is a significant step forward in the provision of care and treatment for HPFT service users and their families in south west of the county. It will provide a modern, safe and pleasant setting for service users with excellent facilities for the provision of a range of different treatments and therapies."

Colne House will be open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, with some services operating outside of these times.

With the restraints trying to be put upon the service, its practitioners & users regarding time spent/allowed to get 'better', it's a very small comfort to know there are nicer pictures on the wall and carpets a little more plush.

My experience at Shrodells and what I took from it was not what the building did for me but what I could do for myself with the help of professionals and other service users.

With every new satellite health centre and service that opens in the south-west Hertfordshire area, the plan to provide integrated and co-localised health care for this corner of the county seems farther and farther away. Not that I would deny them the opening of such facilities, God alone knows they are desperately needed. But it seems to me the health part of the "Health Campus", which is presented as the absolute bedrock and raison d'être of the partnership's and mayor's plans for bulldozing parts of West Watford and Oxhey Park, is in reality seen as a pipe-dream by the Trust. It quite clearly isn't being taken into account when planning service delivery for the county as this news shows.

It'll take more than a lick of paint and some pan pipe music to sort out Mental Health services if my experiences are anything to go by.

Anything must be an improvement on the oppressive unsuitable and unfit for purpose service provided at Rembrant House. So is this new venue for mental health instead of Rmbrant house or as well as because if they are just re housing the clueless staff in a different building it will be pointless because the policies used seem to be aimed at denying treatment werever possible and with little actual understanding of Mental Halth problems.

Before my time was cut short at Shrodells, the group I was part of was told it would move to Upton Road some time in 2013/14.

No idea how it will affect those at Rembrandt House - and yes, I agree re. the shambolic nature of the 'care' given there. I was left more distressed with every visit during my (thankfully) short time under the doctors there.

Does anyone know if the Shrodells Unit is closing completely?
I met some wonderful people there, both professionals and patients.

Sadly (due to my mental health!) I'm no longer in contact with any of them :(
