The museum and art gallery in Bushey has received £4,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support a public exhibition, ‘Bushey during the Great War: A Village Remembers’.

The exhibition will include 50 panels telling the story of Bushey and Oxhey during the Great War and there will be displays of work by students from The Bushey Academy and St Margaret’s School.

Dianne Payne, WW1 co-coordinator for Bushey Museum, said: "We are thrilled to have received this award, which will enable us to mount an exhibition that will help everyone, especially young people, to understand the level of sacrifice made by local men and women and the effects of the war on our community."

Watford Observer:

During the exhibition, which runs from August 4 to 24 at The Bushey Academy, there will be a series of community events, talks, poetry readings and live musical performances.

A commemorative peal of bells will be rung in honour of Bertram Prewett, a nationally known parish bell ringer, who lived locally and died in 1918.

All information gathered by researchers on this project will be digitally recorded for the future and an online interactive archive will be created, where everyone can access and contribute information.

Full details and biographies of those who died and the names and addresses of those serving abroad will be on show at the exhibition.

Residents of Bushey and Oxhey will be able to find out who lived in their house during the Great War.

As part of the project, a number of householders in Bushey Heath, Bushey and Oxhey will be invited to display a temporary plaque on their window or front gate throughout the month of August to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by nearly 400 young men from the area.
