Work has begun on the Watford Community Housing Trust’s first Three Rivers development.

The trust’s project in Mill End will see 27 houses being built for social and affordable rent near Chorleywood Working Men’s Club, off Shepherds Lane.

Ann Shaw, leader of the Liberal Democrat-run district council, joined Penn ward councillors, Les Mead and Sarah Nelmes, and staff from the trust for a ground cutting ceremony at the site last Thursday.

Councillor Shaw, representative for Maple Cross and Mill End, said: "The great thing is that we are going to get more affordable housing for local people in this area.

"That is why we chose the trust, it’s what we are determined to do, and it is why we are going to enjoy working together so we can really achieve something for this community."

Tina Barnard, chief executive of the trust, added: "We are thrilled to have this opportunity to provide much-needed affordable housing in Mill End. We have a target of building 500 homes new homes in Watford and Three Rivers by 2017, and as our first Three Rivers development this is a very important step along the way."

The 27 homes will consist of 12 two-bed houses for affordable rent and 15 three-bed houses for social rent, one of which will be wheelchair accessible.

A new playground will also be installed.

The homes are due to be completed by December.
