Well over 1,000 people gathered in the Town Hall, Watford, on Wednesday, to give the Prime Minister, Mr Clement Attlee, a rousing send-off to what was described as his “election crusade”.
A big ovation greeted Mr Attlee as he mounted the steps of the platform. It was not the first visit he and his wife had made to the borough, but, in the words of the chairman Alderman H.J. Bridger, it was “an historic occasion”.
It was the first time a Prime Minister had spoken in the Town Hall and he and his wife were the first distinguished visitors to sign the visitors’ book.
