Schools across Hertsmere are being invited to join in celebrations to mark Commonwealth Day next month.

As part of nationwide celebrations, flags will be raised at events across the country to mark commitment to the Commonwealth.

The Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Paul Morris OBE, wants a young person to help lead a flag raising ceremony Monday 10 March at 10am outside the Civic Offices.

He said: "I am setting a competition for young people aged between five and 11 years who attend a school in the Hertsmere borough. Their challenge is to identify as many flags as possible from the 53 countries included in the Commonwealth.

"The winner will join me and other local dignitaries on the day to raise the flag and help lead celebrations within Hertsmere on Commonwealth Day."

At the event the Mayor will read a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation before raising the Commonwealth flag.
