A Mill End headteacher is "so proud of the commitment" of staff and pupils which has contributed to a primary school being judged as "good" by Ofsted.

Claire Foad’s comments come after Shepherd Primary School was upgraded from being "satisfactory" to "good" by the education watchdog during an inspection last month.

The Shepherd’s Lane school, which educates pupils between the ages of three and 11, has 209 students.

Inspectors, who visited the school on February 6 and 7, remarked that it was "good" because: "Pupils’ achievement has improved since the previous inspection. All groups of pupils make good progress from their below average starting points on entry to the school."

The report also states that: "Teaching is good and some is outstanding. Teachers have good subject knowledge and plan lessons which are enjoyable and stimulating so that pupils are excited about learning."

Inspectors also commented that there has been a "rapid improvement in pupils’ achievement across the school" since they visited in June 2012.

Mrs Foad welcomed the report and said that inspectors recognised that "pupils, parents, staff and governors have all worked together to create a positive, welcoming and successful school".

She said: "We have raised standards in teaching and learning through ensuring high expectations, implementing rigorous monitoring, delivering high quality staff training and ensuring all pupils know how to move their learning on."

She added: "We are so proud of the commitment the whole school community has shown in supporting us getting to ‘good’.

"Everything we have implemented since our last inspection has had a direct impact on raising standards and we are now looking to embed these. We are aiming to achieve outstanding at our next inspection, by ensuring even more pupils exceed national expectation."

When judging a school, inspectors look at the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching, the behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management. All four areas were considered to be "good".

Shepherds Primary School has undergone a £2.3 million refurbishment which led to them becoming a two-form entry last September.

Inspectors commented that the school is not yet "outstanding" as "teachers do not always plan and set work that ensures that pupils make the best progress they can."

Marking was also said to need improvement in subjects such as maths.
