A Watford couple are in training for their first ever marathon and aim to raise funds for two charities close to their hearts.

Tom and Sarah Harland live together in central Watford and are a part of the Watford Joggers running club, where they have been setting personal bests and representing the club at a number of local races.

Between them they’ve run more than 800 miles so far in their training for the London Marathon and are looking to raise a total of £3,600 for their chosen charities.

Mr Harland, who is running for Prostate Cancer UK, said: "I took up running about a year ago and had no intention of running a marathon, well, ever. I wouldn’t have said I was the running type of person.

"However, in August I found out my great uncle had been suffering with prostate cancer for the past two years.

"Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Over 40,000 men are diagnosed every year.

"We all know about breast cancer, and the events organised to raise money and awareness are well publicised and attended. Prostate cancer is much less talked about, but a huge killer to men. I want to help remove the stigma attached to discussing the disease."

Mr Harland works as events officer for Watford Palace Theatre and Watford Borough Council and is also a volunteer Presenter and Producer for Vibe 107.6. Mrs Harland works as teacher at Nascot Wood Infant School.

She said: "As a primary school teacher, I am committed to providing all children with an opportunity to succeed, a high-quality education and a supportive environment.

"My chosen charity Childhood First cares for, treats and educates children with the most severe behavioural, emotional and mental health problems as a result of early life trauma."
